What I Would Do If I Were Barack Obama

Updated on April 8, 2011

That Whole "W" Thing

If You Think You Can Do A Better Job... president why don't you run for office? lol

That was a question posed to me by the HubPage User "warm hands ." At first, I was puzzled. I have never had anyone pose a question to me in the three months or so I have been a member of HubPages. On the surface, it seems a bit superfluous. I mean, why ask a question such as this to someone who simply gives his opinion on the political world of the USA? I am not the coach of the Atlanta Falcons NFL team. I criticize them quite a bit since I am a fan. Does this mean I should run for head coach of this team simply because I criticize them? Of course, that is completely preposterous. But, I think his/her question was innocent enough. So, I will answer it directly and probably with a bit more than this person wanted.

For one thing, I don't have the millions and millions of dollars to run for president even if I had the political expertise, background, and education. I have never held elective office. So, I think that would preclude my ever entering politics. Plus, I'm too old to enter the political field. But, since we still have freedom of speech in this country, I am entitled to express my opinion on our government leaders. I hope that answers your question, warm hands . Anything else you want to ask me, go right on and do it.

Now that we have that out of the way, the question arose in my mind just what would I do if I were the president. If I were President Barack Obama, what would I do to change the direction of my presidency that is languishing as I type. The first thing I would do is take a change of course toward the center. The November elections are just around the corner. By all polling data, it appears the Democratic Party is going to lose control of the House and possibly the Senate (although that does appear to be a longshot right now). I would swallow my pride in the State of Union address in January 2011 and admit my mistakes. It was a mistake to try and force Health Care Reform down the throats of a skeptical American public. It was wrong to have backroom deals and bribes to get the votes for HCR. It was more wrong to go to the "nuclear option" to get the bill passed. If the newly elected Republican Majority started drying up funds (such as hiring new IRS agents, just as an example) necessary for HCR to work, I would keep my mouth shut. I could say I at least tried. I would recognize that the stimulus bill, TARP did not do all I thought they would do. I would admit my mistakes and say I will work with the Republican majority to unleash the American economic machine. "Of course, this is too simplistic and would never work."

I would then make it a point to turn my back on the socialist agenda that I have thought all my life would work so well to help so many people. I would recognize the harm my policies have caused the citizens of this country. I would immediately drop Cap and Trade with the realization that the green jobs are a fantasy that the left-wing dreams up. Here in the real world, where adults have to work and live, I would embark on a new tactic that has worked time and time again. I would have across the board tax cuts for Americans and small businesses across the nation. More money in consumers pockets means most, not all, will start buying. Supply starts dropping because of a higher demand for products. Meanwhile, businesses see that they need to produce more products to keep up with this new demand. What do they do? Gosh, they hire more people to keep up with the demand. Unemployment starts dropping and my approval ratings increase in the polls. People with money in their pockets mean they complain far less. A new revelation for me! More people working means higher tax revenues for the government (of course, I could go into flat tax tirade here, but I won't). So, as president, I take a portion of this new revenue to pay on the 12 trillion dollar deficit I have helped create. Sure, I recognize George W. Bush had a hand in this also. But, as part of my new "hope and change ," I stop passing the buck to him. I man up and start taking responsibility like most adults do. "Of course, this is too simplistic and would never work."

I would cut spending everywhere that I can. I would eliminate the Departments of Education and Department of Energy. Just exactly what do these two massive government monstrosities do except add to government spending?. Furthermore, I would look abroad at the money we are spending to train, house, feed and pay our soldiers in foreign lands. I would tell them we will protect them. But, they are going to have to pick up the tab from now on. If they refuse, we bring our troops home. We are done as policeman of the world. I would have a joint session of Congress and let them know the days of pork barrel are truly over now. Earmarks are a thing of the past. If I can't get congressmen to vote on my bills without payoffs, then I will go to the American people and explain why I can't get Bill X through congress. "Of course, this is too simplistic and would never work."

Illegal Immigration would go the way of the dinosaur as I would give the border patrol all the people and material they need to enforce the immigration law already on the books; The 1986 Immigration and Reform Act. I would make it clear that if the Mexican government does not take steps to stop their citizens from crossing the border illegally, I would recall my ambassador and drop all diplomatic relations with Mexico. This includes all trade and tourism into that country. Also, I would allocate money from the Department of Defense to have rotating units of FULLY ARMED National Guardsmen on the border until I am confident the border is secure. Furthermore, I would make an executive order stating that all people in this country illegally will be subject to federal felony arrest after a 90 day grace period. After that time, beefed up ICE raids will arrest illegals. This also includes illegal employers who will serve a mandatory one year prison stretch in the federal pen. I will make it known anyone with a felony arrest on their record cannot ever enter this country again and never become a citizen. "Of course, this is too simplistic and would never work."

As the new Barack Obama, I would let it be known the days of bowing and apologizing for this country are over. I would instruct the U.S. Navy that they are not to tolerate any further harassment from the Chinese Navy in the South China Sea. We do not recognize their 300 mile sea border. We will no longer kowtow to them. Any further interference in the normal duties of a U.S. Navy ship will be met with a shot across the bow. The next one will count. I would unleash the CIA and other black ops agencies to go after the upper echelon of al-qaeda. People would disappear. People who support this terrorist group would have "accidents ." One of the things we learned in Vietnam is that sometimes you have to sink to the level of the enemy and fight him down there. We discovered this all too late there. But, it can be implemented against those who mean us harm today. "Of course, this is too simplistic and would never work."

I would purge my administration of all the socialist types; the Van Jones, Anita Dunns, David Axelrods and so on. I would let it be known that I finally recognize that capitalism is the fire that has stoked so many economic booms in the past and for so long. I will unleash that roaring machine by not putting so many roadblocks in front of it as I have in the past. The constant spending of money we don't have has all but bankrupted this country. I now know where the true power of this country lies. It does not lie with the failed socialist economic basket-cases of the former Soviet Union, Cuba or Venezuela. It lies where it always had been; the American people. As Ronald Regan said, "The true heroes of America are the consumers who goes into the bakery to buy goods...and the hero that looks back at the consumer across the counter." I will bite the bullet and accept the criticism that will surely come from my own party and former leftist allies. But, I realize this is what America is all about. It's about Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, Henry Ford, Steven Jobs, Bill Gates and on and on. It's about America being America. With my new found philosophy, I will push a head and help where I can. I will give them the tools they need and let America rise from the ashes due to the hard work of the American people. I will not impede them, I will encourage them. I would finally understand that government doesn't necessarily know how to better spend the money that belongs to people who earned it.

That's what I would do if I were President Obama. "Of course, this is too simplistic and would never work."

Pigs will fly before Obama resigns from office. That would be admitting the job is too much for him. Plus, it would put an end to his socialist agenda. Thanks for commenting, frog.

David - Excellent my friend. What I think Obama should do is resign because it is apparent he is in way over his head.

Up and awesome. I found this through a link on my article page. Good writing and spot on.

I can't disagree with your comment either.

Obama is indeed a loose cannon.

    Thanks ~:}

Sheri, what is so sad...Obama thinks his socialist agenda will benefit everyone. It benefits a very narrow minority just as we saw in the former Soviet Union. There are many people who support this, who support Obama. But, as has been quote before, "they are useful idiots." They simply don't have the intelligence to see they are being used by Obama and his socialist pals.

Opinion, I can't disagree with anything you say about Congress. But, I believe the problem begins at the top with Obama. It's not just Obama. We have had no real leadership in the Oval Office since RR was president. Obama is power crazed and intent on forcing his agenda no matter the consequences to himself or the American people. Simply put, he doesn't care about anyone but himself.

If it were only the problem of the presidency, then the problem of the country would be specific and identified.

President Obama is all the bad things that you mention here, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. The Congress is the real core of the country's problem.

Over the last seventy years with different presidents and different controlling political parties, it is apparent that Congress is the root cause of the decline in America.

While in theory Congress and the President form two thirds of the checks and balances of the country. In reality it is the party that controls the country.

Congress to be effective for the people has to be bipartisan, but again in reality it is simply the strong versus the weak partisans.

The strong partisans try to drag the weak partisans through the elected term. The end result is a lot of lifting and dragging of opponents but no synergy or accomplishments directed to the people.

It is like rooting for the hometeam, when they lose it is wait until next year. In the case of partisans, it is wait until the next election.

Congress should be viewed as a sports team. When Congress wins it is a team effort, and when Congress loses it is a defeat for the team.

If Congress cannot work as a team then it doesn't serve the people.

The people (voters) contribute to their own Cogressional losing team by blindly voting for the party pick, rather than by the player stats.

Unfortunately, the people today spend more time and effort following sports than they do following politics.

Perhaps we should use sport uniforms for Congress to identify their sponsors. Sort of like the NASCAR drivers. Adorn Congress with patches from the lobbyists that supported their election and re-elections.

I wish you really were BO after reading this idea packed policy statement. Sadly for America, this man really does believe his press, and he thinks he is that much smarter than the rest of us.

You know, David, I didn't vote for Bush, and I was a dyed in wool Democrat, but when Obama hit the scene and just a little of his history started surfacing, I did a complete about-face in my life.

Neither candidate in 2008 was a "natural born citizen" as the Constitution requires. Obama was born a British subject. McCain was born in Panama. However, at least was/is a patriot.

He's a usurper, and there's no reason for any of the military to take orders from him.

Sheila, I have no doubt Obama likes things the way they are. It is almost as if this is some sort of master plan.

American, ehehehe...thanks for that! Personally, I don't understand why anyone would want to be President of the USA. The headaches surely outweigh any personal satisfaction one receives from that job.

eovery, I am under no illusions as to what Obama will do if the Republicans become the majority party in Congress. He is already blaming Republicans for obstructionism and they are the minority part. Democrats consider you an obstructionist if you don't agree with them. It has always been that way.

I am afraid he will do the opposite and point the finger at the republicans that won't let him get anything done, and we should not vote for them in 2012.

It will be on big excuse. And pointing of fingers. That is all he has done so far, why wouldn't it change.

    Keep on hubbing!
