What Is A Unicorn?
You're Going To Find Out Today!
A unicorn is a mythological creature, heavy emphasis on the "myth" part of the word there folks in this Hub. Jeez! Can't you just wait until 1 PM EST when Obama unveils "his" budget reduction plan? I'm sitting on pins and needles because I just love to hear the man speak but not as muich as he loves the sound of his own voice.
Did you catch the Prez's press secretary's remarks about this crisis we are facing about our fiscal solvency. Remember, never let a good crisis go to waste to try to score your political points. Now according to Carney, Ryan's "Plan For Prosperity" is a "non-starter," his words not mine. How so? Well, according to that sage Whine House spokesman it is because his budget doesn't balance. Has he bothered to look at his bosses budget lately?
In reality what we are seeing is Obama's defensive move to cover his buttocks because Ryan forced his hand. Obama just hates to be bested you see. He's the one who had the grand idea of setting up a bipartisan budget deficit commission and he's the one, once that the results were released, who treated it like a red herring. The recommendations were so stark and politically unpopular that he chose to ignore them completely. You see his reelection chances would dim if he has to actually the take the decisive, and painful, actions necessary to slay this monster. Politicking though is precisely what landed us on this square in the first place so please don't expect anything else but that this afternoon.
This is where the unicorn will fly to the rescue so to speak, but remember that they are only a myth. You better have your backhoe handy for this affair. What is expected is more dreams, wish lists and Washington hog wash. What I expect to see is massive tax hike proposals and there is speculation that he will suddenly embrace the red herring. After all, he does need a plan, anyone's plan, since he never had one of his own, other to to spend excessively while he could. The danger of embracing the debt commission recommendations is what we can't see. How much behind the scenes action is going on to undermine the findings of that commission in Smirkyville? It's not that I'm a conspiracy theorist but that I'm a realist. I have always watched what the man does, not what he says.
The myth lies in those massive tax increases my friends and neighbors. If you don't severely cut spending then the federal government, historically, will see that additional revenue as a means to spend even more money. History might not repeat itself but this is Foggy Bottom where life is beautiful all the time. A stroll down memory lane, a short one, may be in order.
Remember when Obama cut a deal to extend the Bush tax cuts just this past December? He praised the bipartisan support that went into that effort. He claimed he understood the ramifications of raising taxes during hard economic times. When that is done there is a disincentive to those who produce the most income to produce more. If they produce more to give to our already wasteful federal monster, they end up keeping even less. It's called basic economics which Obama himself admits he knows nothing about.
The scenario is as follows. The top 1% of our population earn but 19.6% of the income produced in this nation. In achieving that feat, they end up paying 41% of the taxes collected. WOWSER! What a deal that is. What he will unveil is a plan to make them pay even more? Lets extrapolate this a bit. The top 5% of income earners already pay 60% of the taxes scooped in. Think about that. Is that fair and equal treatment? Will raising those folk's taxes even more create an incentive for them to produce even more. Of course it won't.
You see, using Obama's rationale, everyone should be treated equally except the successful people in the nation. He wants to perpetuate that myth. Most of us want to keep as much money in our grubby little hands as we can without doling it over to the federal government so it can redistribute it to those on the dole.
In case you have failed to notice, Obama is a demagogue. Today expect more of the same. He wants to make the rich the bad guys today and he will propose to scrap the same Bush tax cuts he just praised but weeks ago. This whole thing smells of his continuation of policies that promote more class warfare. The Great Uniter? Give that a rest if you will.
The real test will be that his "plan" will leave Foggy Bottom in charge. In his mind that is paramount. He is a politician after all. We're all suffering through astronomical gas price hikes, inflation at the grocery store and other price increases associated with rising commodity prices. That is all secondary to this man. Maintenance of power is primary - at our expense. He will once again show what a demagogue he is. Embracing compromise will be the key here. The very same type of compromises that have gotten us into this mess in the first place. I call it "political theater," Take your seat and watch the show.
But the fact is folks, there AREN'T really such things as unicorns, except in Obama's world.
The Frog Prince
PS - Am I a prophet? No, not by any means. But having just listened to the whole "political" speech because that was what he makes so well, I think I hit the nail on the head. Long on the demagoguery, short on specifics and a general call for sympathy. That isn't going to reduce much. It was an entirely political speech once again meant to continue the class warfare he wants to divide this nation with even further. Did anybody else notice that Little Joey Biden went to sleep while his boss was droning away?
