Beauty In Your Eyes; What Is Considered Beautiful

Updated on September 15, 2013
Source

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Definition of Beauty: "The quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit : loveliness" Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Whichever way you look at this phrase, it's very true. People tend to see beauty in something or someone that is pleasing to the eyes. The stereotype that Hollywood, or the organizers of the Miss Universe and Miss World, are setting, may not necessary be what other people considers as 'beautiful'. Think about it: that concept of judging, a handful of people setting the rules, and then claiming 'World's most beautiful Women', might just have a tad bit of falsity to it.

Regions around the world have different perceptions of what beauty is. What is beautiful to us in the US may not be accepted as beauty in Senegal. What is considered beauty in India, may not be considered to be beautiful by the people in Japan.

Looking beyond our Box.....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! In China, the attractive woman is someone with a very slim figure (size 4, 5), flat chested, pale skin, and they like big eyes. They are apprehensive about getting a tan, they make sure they are covered when going out during the day, and an umbrella is used quite often. Pale skin is not only sought out by the women, but is also desired in men. It shows your status. Wealthy people are pale, working people are tan.

Interestingly enough, in old English culture, pale skin was also recognized as a feature of women of status. Whitened skin free of freckles or marks, eyes set far apart, plump with a big chest, narrow waist and big hips were regarded as feminine loveliness, along with the practice of plucking hairline to make the forehead wider. It was brunettes that caught the eyes of men.

Africa is a vast continent divided into north, southeast, west, and central Africa. How one looks at beauty differs from region to region. Their definitions of beauty might be different but there are some common features that are preferred around Africa. .....
In many parts of Africa, big women with large breasts and big hips are desirable; a sign of beauty – it is associated with abundance and fertility.

Beautiful Women Around The World!

Japan: smooth skin, and straight black hair is very desirable.

The Padaung women of Southeast Asia puts metal rings around their necks from an early age to stretch their necks, this increases their desirability.

In India, on the other hand, sharp features, long nose, fair skin, long hair, and big eyes are perception of beauty. Out of all these characteristics, fair skin seem to have the highest preference.

In Iran they love small noses, and the plastic surgery that take place there just for nose jobs is phenomenal!

So, all these countries that send their women to the Miss World pageant, or Miss Universe contest, why are they all skinny, tan, long legged, tall girls like what America considers beautiful? Or should I say what Hollywood thinks beauty to be?
The answer is pretty simple, actually; these contests have set up certain criteria to enter, and they are based on..... You guessed it right, HOLLYWOOD, or the stereotypical American perception of beauty. Even Americans themselves all have different tastes, and find beauty in various features being prominent or refined. These general claims of "most beautiful" are just the collective, watered-down opinions that require the least thought to appreciate...

Who Knows.....

As the world is getting smaller, lot of younger generations tend to see the 'Hollywood image' as the criteria of beauty, and are losing their cultural understanding. This acceptance of what is beautiful is also changing with time, and outside influences. So, is it safe to say that at one point in the future everyone around the world will have the same concept of what beauty is? Only time will tell....

I think that there are some common things about beauty everywhere, including symmetry, proportion, curves, softness of skin and overall attractiveness. Color does not matter.

Beauty is viewed in different way in different places. The beauty concepts of different places are explained well in the hub. However I believe that what ever God has created is beautiful. But they are viewed differently by each.

Hi, Marquis, thanks for all the comments...... Really appreciate your visit. It's sad how most of the time people over look the beauty inside...... And I can understand how you feel.

I know what Wikipedia says and all those glamor magazines perceive beauty as, and I don't agree with them! Physical beauty doesn't last, it's the inner beauty that lives on.....

Maybe, but having a good demeanor and being average looking only goes so far. People still judge more based on appearance than the heart. If not, average people would be able to have relationships with the opposite sex as much as attractive people.

Yes, our physical sense of beauty is changing over time, I agree. But I also believe an average looking person can be more beautiful than a physically beautiful person with a sour demeanor.

If you take a visit over to wikipedia and look up what beauty means.

Notice neoteny, dimples, lighter skin, big eyes, small nose, narrow nose, big eyes, eye color (blue) and smaller stature for girls is considered cute. Long hair, long legs, clear skin, white teeth are also considered desirable.

Take a look at the magazines, beauty pageants and what is desired more in society.

Being a Black person growing up, I was called more names by Blacks than Whites while in elementary and middle school.

And my mother also contributed to calling me names.

      I will list the names:

      1.black tar

      2.tar

      3.monkey

      4.ape

      5.gorilla

      6.midnight

      7.black & ugly

There were others, but I can not remember at this time. Also, I noticed that lighter-skinned Blacks got all the attention and love. This effects me even after 40 years.

Being of Native American descent my Grandmother on my mothers side would always tell me a beautiful woman had "strong teeth".

I asked my Grandpa about it once and asked him if he married Elisi "Grandmother" because she had "strong teeth".

He said no that she rarely smiled when she was young because she was shy. Confused I asked him how could he see if she was beautiful or not if she never smiled. He laughed and told me..."I opened my heart then it was easy to see".

Married 60 years and he died less than a week after she did. Hollywood can't touch that vision of beauty with a 10 foot pole.

Hi there, savvy dating! Welcome to my corner.... You are absolutely correct, usually it has to with symmetry, and you are also correct in saying that we need to do away with this super skinny image!

Appreciate your visit and your comment. Hope to see you around :)

Although there are diverse ideas about physical beauty around the world, there is still an underlying sameness; it ususally has to do with symmetry, particularly of the face. With bodies, however, more weight can be quite acceptable and even desirable (as you stated) in some countries. We would do well to get past the "having to be super skinny thing" that we obsess about in the U.S. It might even help a lot of young people who are struggling with weight issues.

Thanks for writing a truly interesting hub.

True beauty is doing the best to improve yourself within reason and capability. Being physically healthy, improving yourself mentally and spiritually. Making your home a good place, yourself good and your presence every where else good. It does not require money but determination to overcome and to change yourself. Strength is exercising and changing your diet to improve your health. Changing your picture to understand others and to open the minds of others to other possibilities. We are who we are but excuses, condemnation and complaining will never get you anywhere in self improvement. Make the good choices and you will always be as beautiful as you can possibly be.

Interesting topic. Each country has their own criteria when it comes to beauty and you have stated it here. That's good that you pointed out that beauty is not only physical beauty, but also traits and qualities in a person that makes them beautiful. I also agree with unknown spy though.

I love the slightly-oddball or quirky-is beautiful idea I once heard related to Mick Jagger's ex, the mother of most of his kids {a model and of COURSE my memory goes blank on her name}, she I think was born in Texas...anyway he was with her the longest. She was in a Batman movie. So, she has a slight overbite or something but it photographs well and her face is not "barbie-perfect" so it is actually more interesting -- she was in high demand as a model ! And yes she was beautiful but with a quirk or two - now that is cool. JERRY HALL, that's her name, maybe "Jeri" or "Jerri".

Superficial beauty is passing, regardless of the culture. It is the inner beauty that builds strength in relationships. Some of the most "attractive" women of the world seem to come from a blending of cultures, instead of one set group. But, the world is fickle there, too. How many movie queens of yesterday are still there today? Nuff said!

I wonder what I would be like if I was raised on an Island where there was no one plugging gin my hear what 'beautiful' really meant.

This is a great piece. It's a sad truth that so many have such a marginal definition of beauty. You did a good job outlining the "outliers" of beauty in today's society. I do hope, as you allude to at the end, that society's accepted view of beauty changes once again into a more inclusive and eclectic one.

Thank you for your wonderful comment! I had friends from different parts of the world, while in grad school, and they were all different, and beautiful people! How can WE set standards when everyone is beautiful in there own special way.....

Appreciate your vote and sharing it.... :)

This hub was one that the world definitely needed, the standards on beauty today are definitely far to superficial, and over rated.

I must agree with you in every way, this is mostly due to social order, social class, societal pressures, peer pressures, and like you pointed out the media and Hollywood in America.

Lets hope more people get the message your putting out, because the lord knows many woman and men need to have a much clearer image of beauty than what they've been force feed to bear witness and in many differing ways today.

Nice hub voted up and getting shared!

Very true I agree! If we really think about what the world considers beautiful, it could just be a bit of an admiration. No one may have the same concept of what beauty is, but if we look at the real essence of what's beautiful, I can say we have to dig inside the heart. Beautiful hub LaThing, thank you.

@Lord de Cross, thank you for your comment! I believe as the world gets 'closer', people will start seeing the reality everywhere, the media will not, hopefully, be influencing our future generations like it is doing now......

@Anupma, your are welcome :) thanks for the visit, and your comment....

I agree with you--different regions viewed beauty differently. Growing up in Asia, it was often hinted that I'm not as pretty because of my tan skin. They still think that fair skin is beautiful and prestigious. Beauty is what is appealing and I think that once you get to know a person, the outside fades and the inside becomes more important and enduring. Thanks for sharing--love it.

Oohh.... That must have been interesting to meet them first hand. I didn't know about the ear lobs. I didn't mention a lot of places, like the one in Africa where they put small disks/plates on their lips! I am fascinated by people's concept of beauty, specially when people change their features to look beautiful, and everyone has a different approach.

Thanks for sharing and your vote, appreciate it!

A fun and interesting read. I have met some Padaung women over this way, and they not only use the rings on their necks, but also in their ear loabs. The rings on the neck don't actually stretch it, but instead deform and push down the shoulders, making the neck appear longer.

The Asian class factor is very true, as poor people are normally working the fields and cannot avoid getting tanned, but the wealthier people can avoid the sun and afford creams.

      Shared, up and interesting.

Very wise insight, every face does have something unique, that's what makes everyone so special.

Yes, I do know you write about zombies, and you are pretty good at it, but I am not sure I would want to look at them to see if I can find something nice in them!! lol, lol.... Of course, if they do exist! :)

Thank you for comment and vote, appreciate it!

Yes. Eye of the beholder, indeed!

I, Personally, don't find these modern models who hardly ever smile for fear of getting wrinkles and have rather plain feautures, attractive at all.

There is beauty in every face. Each face has something unique and different. Someone may have no cheekbones and a very small mouth, but the intenseness of their eyes screams 'beauty!"

As you know, I write about zombies. I could probably even find beauty in a ZOMBIE'S face if I looked hard enough! haha That is, if they really did exist...

      Useful and voted up!

Absolutely right, again! We don't see the inner soul for a reason, I don't think we can handle it!

'Power of Make up' ...... Temporary thing, Natural beauty is the best! Right? :)

They say, "never underestimate the power of make up" yeah?... I do think of one perfect Power Seller candidate for covering up the ugly side of the soul...scary stuff. better not go there, huh? May be we can't see it for a reason then? o_0

Absolutely right, Max! If we were to see the inner soul, life in this planet would be very different. It could go both ways though, you would see the ugly side of the soul too.... Right?

Thanks for your visit.... See you around :)

Yeah, this is so right! We face this question every single day and sadly, it effects our lives in more ways than it should be... It's a shame that inner soul can't be seen by the naked eye though, right?
