What You Can Do About :: Human Trafficking :: The Reality Behind the Movie "Taken"

Updated on March 10, 2012

Do You Have The Time

What Time is it?

I know that is a silly question but humor me, glance at the clock, it is ticking.

Write down the time if you might forget it is important to your understanding of this issue, and your actions that follow. Now go ahead and read, watch the short videos, and be sure to add  your username to the comments section, even if you do not comment.

Listen as You Read

In the movie "Taken" a man loses his daughter to the black market slavery trade, known now as Human Trafficking. He is a man with "a particular set of skills" he says in the movie. Liam Neeson is one of my favorite actors. Think though about that phrase.

We all have a particular set of skills. No we cannot jetset around the world and break up the black market. We are not in a Hollywood movie. But we are not helpless either. I will be adding to this Hub as ideas come and in the comments section I expect you to add too. Add your hub on the subject if you have one and if you don't, find one and add it here. Check Human Trafficking in the search at the top of the page. This is the least we can do. Read one, find one that has merit in your eyes and rate it up and add it in my comments section.

We are not helpless. I have a particular set of skills too. I am a writer and hopefully a good enough one to get some attention. But you, who have been around longer than I have, you who have blogs and websites, you have a power that I do not have. You command attention. Get the message out, for me, as I am weaker than you in technology.

You may not have money to give, I don't either. That did not prevent me from joining the fight. I checked it out on and you should check ,before you donate any money, to make sure it is not a scam. Just put in the website or organisation name on google search along with the word scam to find out, before you donate. I cannot stress that enough.

Now maybe you are on twitter or facebook, tell all of your friends. If you know how to stumble ir digg, please do.

Next, when you go to work or church or the gym... Wherever you go, tell someone.

If you have a printer make fliers with the facts from the organisations who are striving to fix the problem.

You are writers. The pen is mightier than the sword. Write letters to your local and state agencies, write to your representatives and senators and governors and mayors. They work for you! You helped them get elected! Flood their mailboxes with your outrage and ask what is being done in your community, in your state.

Get involved. Pick a group and have a fundraiser, block party,or neighborhood yard sale. Get educated on the subject, then educate others, too.

Knock on a neighbors door that you have not met. Become friends. Tell them I sent you and ask them to find a neighbor they do not know and do the same.

When they ask you who I am, say some girl on line who has this dream of us all working together to make the world a better place. She says it starts here, with you and me. The problems are right in our back yard and only together can we fix that.

What is Your Deepest Fear

Why Are We Here?

Truly the question of the millenium. I believe we are here to leave the world a better place than it was when we got here. I am trying to do my part.

In stead of asking why God would allow this to happen we should be saying, Who am I not to make the effort to stop it. I leave you with only two videos today. Chosen carefully to try very hard to convey the message.

When you ask the question, "Who Am I?" Let your answer be, I am the one determined to make a difference.

Someone becomes a victim of slavery every thirty seconds, how long did it take you to read this and watch the videos? How many people became a victim? Act now.

Hello Bryan, yes it would be good for you to take a stand and stop what is happening in New Zealand. We must all fight this insidious horror in our own countries, and stand together as a Global Village, taking care of all of the world's children. If we don't, what sort of future would there be?

Thank you for your comment nkozet, it is true that it can happen to anyone. My Granddaughter is two, and I see how smart and how beautiful she is and realize that she is a target, and that all of these people were also beautiful smart children, and then they became slaves...

We must, continually, every day, write about this, comment on it, vote for stronger laws, and for harsher punishments to the crime.

yes indeed human trafficking proves to be a major problem for the world, and ehats more painful is that not many people are aware of what this is doing to our world, children, women and men. the lack of the availability in the poor and remote areas contributes alot into the growing of human trafficking because thats where most of the victims are found, what can be done? working together is a first step.lets not turn a blind eye to the probem,Men and Women who assist in human trafficking, how do you give away a child for 30 dollars and watch them cry while they are being taken away? can happen to your child as well.

The saddest part Ivorwen is that at the time it may have appeared that the option to sell themselves into slavery was the best. Here's how it happens, and I have been in touch with many: He (or they)says he will find her a husband (or marry her) and give her a good life in America, for a certain amount of cash. When she has enough cash he claims that did not cover expenses but that she can work it off. Once married and away from home and family the person becomes afraid and it just gets harder and harder.

Another way is in the wake of disaster. These so called charities go and offer to take out a family member to safety, and actually charge the family in some cases, for getting the child out.

Others just promise (And if you were already abused and starving you might think it best to accept) a better life and the victim thinks they can do no worse than they already are.

Most of the time though, people are just stolen or sold.

I have known women who thought that they were dancing for the money to take care of themselves or their child, until they tried to quit. Then they found out that someone had bought them and they would either dance in the club, or disappear. In one particular case there were several cops involved in the purchase and when the girl decided she was done dancing they told her that they would have children services take her daughter away and make no mistake, they would do it and she would never see the child again.

We never really know what is going on over there, only in our own heads Ivorwen, that's it.

I find it so sad that many young girls and boys 'sell themselves' into this type of life, when someone comes along offering to get them high paying jobs in other countries.

It makes me mad that many women choose to work in similar conditions to that of a brothel. In this area, a brothel was busted a few years ago, but there is a legitimate group of 'exotic dancers' for hire that quickly took over the market.

Thank you for coming forward with that Rescueachild. My friends and I are just discussing this on Facebook, I am Fay Constantino there, if you would like to be friends. I am a survivor of child sex trafficking and it happened in foster care for four horrible years. THIS is NO JOKE!!!! It can happen to your kids and the government is involved. Make NO mistake what happened to me is still being covered up even though my picture and the crimes that they did to me is splattered all over pedophile sites and hailed as "awesome child vintage porn!"

I am writing a series of books on this issue because I know alot about it. Pro~active awareness IS what we need to keep our children safe. Gone are the days where you can say, what you don't know can't hurt you.

Well, pimps, traffickers, pedophiles, and John's CAN and WILL hurt your child given half a chance. EDUCATE yourself and your kIDS because these predators know everything about kids to make them DO what they want and will employ every single evil technique in doing so without care for your child.

THIS IS A FACT! The STATS ARE growing...don't let your kids be on it!

So many people don't even realize that human trafficking is such a horrible problem around the whole world. You did an awesome thing here by writing this hub and encouraging people to do something, anything, about the problem. Thank you!

Even a cell phone without minutes can call 911 as long as the batteries charged.

Most of the harm that comes to women and children is through family, learn to set bounderies and keep them.

Youtube has a series of videos at that teach kids anti kidnapping techniques.

You are getting some feedback on this-- (I did post a reply in the forums. Maybe my sugessions didn't ring a bell.) I hope you will keep posting more hubs as you get more updated information.

Thank You shareitt, it is important that people are aware. You can't prepare for a danger that is constantly swept under the rug. This is real, we have to be prepared and prepare our kids, too.

Being aware is the key and then in some small way we can volunteer to help, maybe with a child at school-tutor...any worth while difference big or small is making life better. Thanks for the hub :)

This is an on-going and increasing problem in areas around the world. It is sad, devastating, grief-stricken to parents and horrible to think of this slavery in our modern world.

Faybe ~ I found you on Hubs and know that you are a soft-hearted being who does feel helpless, but has overcome that feeling with your ability to write and get this message out.
