Where Once Stood a Great Land

Updated on April 15, 2013

Once a land of the free, filled with honor and pride

By men and women who served and offered their lives

A land where people live free from terrorist strife

Where men and women can choose what to do with their life

But we face a new threat in this country today

From elected officials that by our taxes are paid

They set up a health care and retirement plan

With a free family medical and a pay that’s quite grand

They raise our taxes to cover their wants and needs

Pass laws to protect them so they can do as they please

It’s a private membership club of liars, lawyer’s and thieves

It’s a club called congress, with back room deals and of greed

And how then can we change the club they’ve instilled

They know we can’t change it and there’s no way they will

So they try to appease us with our new health care plan

But even it’s filled with loopholes payouts and scams

Politicians come forward and say they’ll fight all they can

And ask for our votes with their promise to take up our stand

But once they’re elected and become a part of the club

They’ll forget about us and the cause they once said they loved

But in two years campaign time will come once again

And those who asked for our votes will do so again

They’ll talk of a new plan a better one than before

But they will need more money to get their foot in the door

So we sit back and watch as they take our country one day

Take our family values; pursuit of happiness and retirement away

They’ll take our religion, our freedom and our guns as well

And we’ll sit back and ask why, this, our great country fell

It may well come to pass because we won’t take a stand

And we’ll watch those we elect take our homes and our land

One day where this country once stood, a new one will stand

And learn of our failures and how once there was a great land

You've made some great points in this poem. I believe that American's need to get to the point where we don't expect other people to do things for us. Because we have the freedom to vote, we believe that we can simply vote and not act. This doesn't work, if we want to change the world we need to be willing to do it ourselves, not vote someone else in to do it.
