Our world is not the world of Sir Thomas More, wherein everything is as perfect as a picture. There is no poverty, no drought, no starvation, no crime and no terrorism to disturb the lives of people. There is perpetual serenity, peace and harmony everywhere. It’s an ideal world and everyone wishes to live in such a world. On the other hand, we are living in a real and humdrum world, wherein everything is at sixes and sevens. It’s not as flawless as Utopia. There is poverty, starvation, drought, financial problems, terrorism, diseases and anything that may cause harm to the well-being of human being. That is the reason; our world may be labeled as Dystopia in contrast to Utopia.

Likewise, all human beings are not picture-perfect in any respect. Everybody is lacking in something, which constrains him to ask for the help of others. We are interdependent upon each other. There are times, when we need someone to help us, while other people need us to help them. We can establish the Utopian ideal world by cultivating the spirit of taking-and- giving in our society. Now let’s play the devil’s advocate as to what extent helping others create impacts on the lives of people.

Impacts of Helping People

Helping people creates many far-reaching impacts on the lives of down-trodden people and your life in many respects. These impacts are of various natures, which are expounded below one by one:

Helping People Can Reduce Your Stress

Have you ever thought of those people, who are wandering in the markets, on roads, on streets and knocking the doors of people just for the sake of one loaf of bread? These people are the ones who deserve our attention, assistance and help. Their main concern is to feed their family members. I am not talking about western countries, where there is an established system to deal with such people. Actually, I am talking about Asian countries, where there poverty is below the poverty line. Helping these people will not only reduce your stress, anxiety and tension, but it will provide a lot of relief to the needy people as well. If you are feeling bad and you don’t know how to cope with it, just step outside your home and look around for people who are waiting for the help of someone. Believe me, you will find inordinate consolation, satisfaction and contentment of heart by helping others. Thus, helping people is the best way to get rid of day to day stress and tension.

Helping People Gives Rise to Empathy

Empathy plays an important role in helping people. Without the spirit of empathy, you cannot help people in any matter. To help people, you will need to empathize with people, who are face to face with hardships. When you visit people, who are in trouble, you feel sympathy for them, which gives rise to empathy. Thus helping people is the best way to develop the spirit of empathy in you. Those people, who don’t have the spirit of empathy, should resort to helping others. When you find someone in hot waters, just visit him and imagine that what sort of situation he is undergoing through. As soon as you feel yourself in the midst of those conditions, wherein the person is confronted with, you will certainly spring into action to help him and get him out of the problem. Thus, it develops empathy, which leads to helping people.

Importance of Helping Others

Gordon B. Hinckley says:

“The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.”

Helping People is Tantamount to Newton’s Law of Reaction

You might have studied the Newton’s 3rd Law of Action and Reaction, which states that “For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force.” Same is the case here with helping people. When you help others, people will correspondingly endeavour hard to reward you for your kindness and help that you provided them during their plight. It is tantamount to give-and-take policy. If you help others, you will also find an ample assistance, whenever, you find yourself in any trouble. It’s not necessary that only that person, whom you helped, will be available to help you, rather any other person may help you. It is a natural phenomenon. If you help people, you will also get assistance in return. It is a truth and there is no falsity in this statement. Just try it and let me know how you experienced it.

Helping People Creates Social Connectedness

One of the most important benefits of helping people is the achievement of social connectedness. Helping people will certainly increase your sphere of relationship with numerous people whether they are within or outside your kinship. You feel connected to people, which results in happiness and contentment of mind for you as well as for others. You won’t feel lonely and forlorn among the miseries of the world. There are many people to back you in any issue. You don’t have to look around for help of others. You will find a lot of your connections, who will stand by you, during any emergency. It is just like LinkedIn, where everybody has many connections. Every connection can benefit from other connection. That is the reason; you don’t have to bank upon others as you have got your own connections, who are ready to assist you.

Helping People Creates Generosity

Helping people is an interesting means of igniting generosity in other people. When you offer donations generously to people, who are typically affected by natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, storms, cyclones, or man-made crises i.e., terrorism, accidents, war and honour killings, it spurs the spirit of generosity in other people. They see you, disbursing your pocket money among the people, which arouses their emotional feelings and compels them to indulge themselves in such a fruitful activity. You give a lesson to people that you are a part of their lives. It brings an end to miserliness in many people.

Helping People Builds a Better Society

Building of a better society in every respect is one of the rewards of helping others. It brings stability in the society economically and morally. When you help people financially, you prevent them from indulging in evil deeds. If you provide support to people, they will feel grateful to you. Resultantly, you will also feel happiness and satisfaction. It promotes the spirit of kindness among people. People are ready to help each other and get rid each other of their problems through coordination and combined support. It supports the poor financially and promotes the rich morally. Thus if you want to stabilize your society, just cultivate the spirit of helping people in every part of the world.

Helping People is a Great Virtue

From religious point of view, helping people is a great virtue. Almost every religion has over emphasized the idea of helping people. There is no religion in the world, which is against helping people. It is a great virtue and everybody should reap this virtue through helping people. Helping people is a main principle in Islam. According to the teachings of Islam, a person who alleviates the grief of a needy person, Allah will also alleviate his grief in this world.

What are You Waiting For?

Now, it’s up to you how much you can help people. Just throw up everything , go outside and look around for people who are intense need of someone. You can help in many ways:

  • If your friend is sad due to some serious problem, you can visit him and talk to him to alleviate his sorrows. You can divert his attention to something fruitful activity so that he may temporarily forget his problem.
  • You can help a student by sharing your expertise with him in solving many academic problems.
  • You can help your neighbours by not teasing them with loud music.
  • You can help your neighbor by offering presents to their children on special occasions.
  • You can help people by buying them books, notebooks, and other mandatory academic articles.
  • You can help people by getting them jobs.
  • You can help people by treating people with respect and honour.
  • You can help people by passing time with aged people. They need someone to talk to.
  • You can help people by catering to the needs of handicapped people.

There are numerous ways to help people. So, try to help people as much as you can.
