Why can't Americans decide what politicians get paid?

Updated on August 28, 2012

Our politicians are all paid too much. They get rich, even if they only serve one term. They seem to be in the 1% of the rich, while the rest of us are not. If they represent us, why don't they have the same retirement we do? Like Medicare? Why don't they have to be in ObamaCare? Right now, they only seem to be representing, the rich or themselves. That, to me, is not a good thing. This is not just about Republicans, or Democrats, but all politicians. All of them.

Since we elect them, we are the ones who hire them. Why can't we be the ones who decide what they get paid? This will never become into law, because they are the ones who make the laws, not us.

The way to do this, is not to put up tents on Wall Street, or protest in the streets. How can we make something like this become real?

The way to make politicians listen to us is by voting. Remember we hired them and we can fire them. The vote has the power. We have the power. A vote is more powerful then a super-pac. We are not stupid. Just get out and vote

This hub is so short, it could be longer, but it is not. A politician's salary is not the only points. I am thinking about. They seem to be selfish, just selfish. Every single one. But, we can make them work for us. That is what they are supposed to be doing.

Every single vote is counted, every single one. Every vote counts, please vote, A vote has power, We are the ones with the power. Voting is easy, Do not let anyone take the right to vote away.

American Romance Thanks for reading this hub, I agree with all of what you wrote. I know Al Gore is an idiot. I also agree with you about the oil drilling, the problem is people watch to much tv, but they don't actually do any research on their own. I vote each time I can, but research what the person I vote for has done. That is what helps me decide to vote for. OK, I will tell you the truth.... I do not automatically vote for a democrat. My biggest problem is the politician who lied, and will not admit it. "Yes, the economy is bad, but it is not my fault." ( opps, took to many vacations etc) Yes, I may be registered as a democrat, but that does not force me to for a democrat in the voting booth.

You have been so kind as to reading my hubs lately I came over to read some of yours............gotta say I love this one! (ps something wrong with both of us) LOL, Jefferson had a famous quote about what would happen when they realized they could simply vote themselves whatever they wanted from the coffers.

I will never stop believing that Democrats over Republicans want complete control over the people. They push laws to force people and companies to rely solely upon them for guidance and regulation. If this wasn't true then why would they push a healthcare law that they have no desire to use themselves? Why would they tout global warming and use scare tactics like Gore did over the beaches being covered by melting glaciers over the next 10 years, then turn and purchase a $8 million dollar home right on the beach? Is he truly sincere in his fear of global warming or does he want to use the fear for control and power? Republicans are human and joined in for salaries and health care, BUT I do not believe they have near the fanatical groups hounding them for unnecessary laws and regulation just because those groups say so. I work in the oilfield and we are fighting groups pushing the government to stop drilling where prairie chickens live and sand dune lizards. They say the chicken wont mate with the noise from a drilling rig and that lizards wont cross open roads to breed. I have a picture of a prairie chicken breeding next to a rig while its operating, and I have lizard guts on my tires where I have run over them in the middle of open for thought! Michele I am voting your hub up and awesome!

Unless the 27th amendment is repealed they will always be able to rip off the American public.

uncorrectedvision I agree with you. We need to pay attention to what they do when they vote on something. If they do not do, what we want them to do we can vote them out. We should also contact them and let them know this. Until a lot of them know this, they will continue to think we are little, and powerless. But, that is not true. We can vote them out.

Many of them start out rich. Perhaps we should be ignoring the rich part and focus on the ethical part. There are members of Congress who have become wealthy trading on the knowledge of legislation before their committees. If you or I did this we would be up on charges for insider trading. That a Congressman becomes wealthy by honest means doesn't disturb me in the least. Becoming wealthy because they have exempted themselves from the rules all the rest of us have to follow - that needs to stop.

Your comment is so good. You know exactly what you are talking about. The people are the ones who are suffering, while the big banks and the politicians are rolling in the money. I agree with every thing you wrote.

I was just about to say that politicians believe they are working for themselves...that's why they give themselves raises without doing's become extremely apparent the last 4 years that one of the parties in both congress and the senate is more concerned about gaining power for their party instead of doing what's best for the people.

We should absolutely determine their wages as they are suppose to work for us. Somehow this has gotten twisted around and now it seems we work for them. Whenever they make terrible choices, it's always the tax payers that have suffer, and I think this is wrong!

I think we also need to reform the laws to make it easier for congressmen and women to be removed if they're not doing their jobs adequately.

"If we are the ones who can decide what they get paid, then maybe they will start to work for us."

I so agree with this statement. They should be working FOR us, not against us and for themselves. We vote them in for what they promise us then they do a "turncoat" and work to better themselves and their own life style.

Thank you, Michele, for writing this great hub.

It is horrible. That is one of the reasons we have an economic crisis. They are greedy. Thank you for your comment.

I agree. It has bothered me for a long time. Why can congress set its own salary? ridiculous.
