Will Someone Stop the Madness Please?!

Updated on May 9, 2010

Now this government, in it’s infinite wisdom – wants to make it illegal to allow businesses to have internships. The government, using your tax dollars – is hiring over 250 “watch dogs” to ensure that there is no “intern abuse.” [this according to the latest John Stossel show.]

Better get a hold of Bill Clinton on that one there brilliant BHO administration! He’s the only danger to interns…

But I digress.

My daughter interned as a Junior at Hope College, Holland, Michigan for The Tampa Bay Rays. That was the summer of 2005. She stayed with my mother in Clearwater and worked for the Rays for one summer. She didn’t get paid a dime. She got a few T-shirts – and I think a plastic cup – but she worked her tail off like she was paid. They noticed.

Long since graduated, Allie was in a job in California – less than a year ago – she believed she strongly needed to leave.  On my suggestion, she called the Tampa Bay Rays and a contact she still stayed in touch with occasionally, to ask if they had any openings. He was thrilled to hear from her, remembered how hard she worked and told her that they JUST happened to have one position opening in group ticket sales, but that she’d have to interview like all the other candidates. Could she fly out?

In this economy, based on her experience with the job she had in California, her record there as an intern and a good word from this contact (who had at this point moved to a supervisory position), my Allie got the job! Never could this have happened had she not been a PROVEN hard, hard worker as an intern!

She gave her notice in California and drove out to work for the Tampa Bay Rays. She was the number 3 Ticket seller for them last month (to be fair, they ARE in first place as I write this but she IS a great salesperson!) and she is now living with my mother who just started to need help.

Without that internship she never would have had the contact and never would have had even a chance at that job. She has that job right now because of her internship. If the Rays had had to hire her – she never would have been able to apply for the job because she’d have to leave to go back to school after the summer break! No less beat out all the other thousands of applicants to get in the door of a MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM!

But because her college had a relationship to send interns to the Tampa Bay Rays - BAM - she's got a great, great job!

Sheila - you got that right! Their future is taken care of, they have millions! They don't give a crap! And they honestly don't care about "creating" jobs - they only care because they want the voters to think that they're actually doing something -which they're not. They're only "doing" this country HARM!

Tom, EXACTLY! Unbelievable! Write/call your lawmakers! This insanity has to end! The only jobs this administration wants to create is government jobs - so that we'll end up just like Greece!

I suppose the administration thinks internships are only for 'the rich'.

Pop - you write about it all the time! They're also trying to monitor the internet. Now the BHO admin. is trying to regulate the internet. When courts slammed down one attempt - according to the WSJ - BHO admin is now going to "rename" or make the internet another category so they CAN regulate. It's truly madness!!

Army Inf. Mom - HONESTLY - one of the lame arguments is interns - the female ones - are getting sexually harassed. I swear -that's what the empty headed blonde said to John Stossel. SO JUST KEEP BILL CLINTON AWAY FROM HER! I'm SO disgusted!

Karl - I would love you to be my neighbor! Lansing, MI is way too liberal for me -I'm surrounded. It's why we don't even get the local paper any more. Such a totally left leaning point of view! I think you're on to something here - all those who want the federal government to ADHERE to the constitution - let's find a spot to live TOGETHER. I'm SO SICK of this intrusion into every aspect of your lives!

COME ON!!! You know with Mr. Socialism in office, they are just getting started. This is another reason why it is so DESPERATELY important that we ALL vote in November. If enough dems are out, it will be a castrated BO trying to control all of us. Not such an easy job then!

Without non-paid internships my daughter Tracee would never have earned her Masters degree in Psychology at Cleveland State University. Without that degree she would not have her job today. This administation is obviousl anti-education!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How outrageous. It is insane to realize that Obama's reach has now gotten into the question of interns! Talk about Big Brother! I echo your sentiments to a tee. Get Out Of Our Lives!

Just what we need, government in every aspect of our lives. Maybe they want us all to go back to the simpler way of life, like living in caves and off the land. Just think, no more taxes. Maybe we could be neighbors. :)

My daughter's best friend interned for NBC while a student at Penn State - she's an NBC producer as I write this. Now I know -they're actually the enemy these days - but she doesn't work for NBC news...LOL! Point is - these internships open doors that would normally never get opened for young people! Contact your lawmakers - tell them NO! Don't do this!!

Interns are great. This is upsetting.

      Keep on hubbing!
