You Can't Always Get What You Want

Updated on August 2, 2019

Ignore the in-my-face obvious issues and lend all of my attention to unwarranted, groundless non-issues? Not happening!

The Rolling Stones for your listening pleasure - turn it up, get up, dance! (but, don't forget to come back to read my article!)

You Can't Always Get What You Want

There was a time, I am very certain my kids absolutely hated the Rolling Stones!

  • Not because they did not like the guys in the band
  • Not because they didn't like their music....nope nothing like that

Because of me!

I'd take the words of one of the Stones biggest hits and I would use those words... to my full advantage.

The song, 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', became almost anthem-like around our home. For you see, I'd not just say the words, I'd sing them and I'd usually make a very big production out of it, which made it so much worse....and yet, so much better!

If the words, "I want" came out of their mouths too many times, I’d go all Mick Jagger on them.....all Jumpin‘ Jack Flash like!

They never tarried very long and would always miss my big finish...for they'd be grumbling under their breath and rolling their eyes, as they'd be distancing themselves far from their crazy Momma.

Recently, (mostly for fun and for old time sake) I had the opportunity to use this 'strategy' on my four year old granddaughter. She was "wanting" everything in the commercials. She watched me and listened intently as I broke into song, she even stayed around for my big finish (a first!) and then she said... "but I need it!"

Yep, her Mom and Dad know that it will take all they have combined and then some to outsmart and outwit this little one.

~~~
All of this wanting ‘talk’ has led me right to where I wish to go with this.
The subject of socialism and Bernie Sanders, for they go hand in hand.
It seems that Bernie Sanders has not gone away and has no plans to go away!
He has gotten into the heads of many and he has left them wanting more.
Many like the idea of going to school and furthering their education (or just going to school for fun and having someone else pay for it) for as long as it takes, without a worry or care, perfectly content to push the costs onto strangers or perfectly capable of going on believing that there’s a big pot of money that just sits around, at their disposal.
They’re all in for getting paid the same wage as an employee that has been doing the same job for 5, 10, 15+ years longer than them, as soon as graduation is behind them (if not sooner) for the only reason that really matters these days, because it's fair!
I guess it is hard to grasp the idea that those that are being paid more, have paid their dues (I just somehow know...the previous statement will come off as foreign, not making much sense) so to put it another way, I guess it is hard to grasp the idea that it takes time to perfect a skill. Because the time has been invested, production will not be slowed, quite the opposite, because a skilled line is in place, making it so, it doesn’t just magically happen!
Of course there is always room for improvement, no matter how long you've been doing any job and of course there has to be a starting point for the learning to begin, for those that are just starting out.
But, to those that think, because they were born, they are somehow entitled and should automatically be earning the same money, for a fraction of the skillset of the higher paid seasoned workers, you have been misled by the Bernie Sanders' of this world.
Bernie is so good at that. He is so good at getting in people's heads and getting them all worked up with the notion that they can do very little, if anything at all and then expect a much bigger return, without investing anything at all!
From what we heard, often throughout the campaign, the requests; demands go something like this:
  • A minimum of $15 an hour....for starters
  • Medicare for all
  • Single payer health care
  • Higher education tuition eliminated
  • Don’t pave the way....pay our way
Is that the gist of it?
Have I covered it fairly well?
Sanders/Clinton Debate 2016 -  Rock Stars? (No, not even close)
Sanders/Clinton Debate 2016 - Rock Stars? (No, not even close)
Bernie Sanders - Rock Star?
Bernie had some of the biggest crowds throughout the 2016 Presidential campaign.
It was a rock concert atmosphere, at times.
His message, or rather...his biggest hits included; 'You can always get what you want', 'You deserve to go to school forever... for free', 'Existing loans aren't your responsibility', 'Responsibility, in fact, is a bad, bad word'.
His biggest hit of all, could say, his grand finale... ‘All of this made possible by taxing the overtaxed a lot more because they {apparently} can never be taxed enough’.
His next hit could be, ‘Use them up, spit them out, move on to the next target’.
(Oh, he doesn’t say it quite this way? hmm okay.)
Does this crowd ever consider that when the 1%, the 5%....the 10% of the wealthiest are all used up and spit out, whose next?
What about after that and then after the last has been targeted and there is no one left to ”share the wealth”?
It will all come to an end at some point and then, will it finally be "fair", when, (to quote Winston Churchill) there is an "equal sharing of misery"?
Although the election is behind us and Donald Trump is the President of the United States, Bernie, much like Hillary, is not going away.
These two and many others just like them are so loved and adored by many and they are regularly out getting their face time.
It's my understanding that (at least Bernie) will be making another run in 2020.
I'll not blow the smoke like Bernie....
I had the pleasure of attending a Rolling Stones concert, with one of my sons, a couple of years back. My son told me that he actually likes ‘the song’ now!
In fact, 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' was the highlight song of the evening for us.
We were singing along...louder and prouder than all others there!
If you’ve never made it to one of their shows, try to, not sure how much longer they’ll be doing this. It is high energy from start to finish and you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.
~ Not just anybody can be a Stone! (Something to think about!) ~
~~~

Gifts from my childhood, were few and far between and so very cherished, each and every one.

Those things which I wanted, outside of birthday or Christmas, I'd work and save for, so that I could eventually get that album, those jeans, a better bike seat, whatever it might have been that I wanted!

It wasn't instant, it never came quickly, but when the time came that I could finally go buy it, it was a very big deal.

I appreciated those things which I worked so hard for and I never took anything for granted, I still feel the same way, I do not take anything for granted!

Mine and my husband's first home wasn't that great.....far from it, but we never planned to stay there forever!

You could say it was the starting block for our life race to come. We were so uncertain of the outcome, but anxious to get started. Our dreams were lofty, but not our goals.

Our goals were very specific and obtainable:

  • To reach high, but not for the stars
  • We'd wait on many things, not borrow to have it right now, only to owe someone later
  • We'd eat modestly at home, splurge on a pizza now and then
  • Our dreams kept us going
  • All of the above kept us grounded

What was true when we were children was still just as true for us as a young couple starting out, we sure weren't getting all we wanted, but we did find...we had what we needed; we had food and we had shelter and cars that ran...for the most part!

~~~
I doubt I will change any minds with my two-cents-worth offering and I don’t have anywhere near the platform of a Bernie Sanders, but I am every bit as passionate.....at wanting young people to appreciate this amazing free enterprise system that we have here in America!
Embrace it, reach high and then reach higher.
Don’t envy the wealth of others...join them. Heck, surpass them!
Don’t look to them for your future, with your hand out, use those strong hands and that great mind to make your own way, be your own person, build your own wealth....the sky and beyond are your limits!
Socialism only limits!
.....If you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need.
      It is a puzzle the way they exalt him the same way I exalt Reagan, yet they are so far from the way he (Kennedy) was.
      Amen. When it comes to the Democratic Party, that quote left with JFK.:(
      One thing JFK got right: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."
      Hi Leland- Thank you!
      Yes, bottom line, business owner/operators are going to do all they need to do to stay afloat.
      For some reason, the mindset that wants, wants, wants....thinks it all about them and all about accommodating them.
      Sorry Charlie, it doesn’t work that way!
      I wish the kids hearing about the $15 an hour min wage rhetoric would stop to consider the fact that employers will just downsize or mechanize to adjust and there will be fewer "people" jobs. Plus, do they really want to be at McDonald's forever? The people working those kinds of jobs are 16-19 year old workers, 70-76 year old workers, and 32 year old managers. Thanks for posting another good'un AB.
      I could take a few classes and go teach the little rascals a little about American exceptionalism, but I'd last a day.... (if that!)
      There would be viral video of the crazy singing and dancing Prof..... 'You can't always get what you want, no you can't always get.... or it will be of me....wringing someone's neck. LOL, either way it wouldn't be good!
      I'll have to leave it to a well- informed much younger crowd to get through to them! ;-)
      Have a great day ya'll!
      Good Morning Paula -
      Conservatives are never invited to give the commencement speech on college campuses (maybe at some smaller private colleges) These kids hear so much crap from day one entering school, certainly through their college years.....and then they are sent off into the world with more crap.....the words of socialists and leftists!
      I sure hope that we will eventually see an awakening in the ‘education system’ (including higher education)
      We’ve got to get through to them.
      Good Morning Pop, Agreed, I sure don’t get the fascination with ‘The Bern’.
      I want to get through to as many of these kids as possible...before they go out and vote, for such foolishness!
      It may be true that dear OLD Bernie & the wicked witch of the East, West, North & South, are still rearing up their stupid heads, but they ARE running out of steam, Angie. It's time for them and their mindless fans to face reality. Bernie is no longer old, he's ancient, (Bless his heart) and Hill the Pill's health has taken a serious nose dive. She's buying depends by the truck load and her alcoholism is accelerating. It's said that drunks like to remain inebriated so they're able to live with themselves. In her case, this is a most true fact. The woman's sheer evil is eating her alive from the inside out.
      Relax, Angie. I'm not the least bit concerned about those 2 relics. They can make all the noise they wish. Their influence has waned considerably. The panic has set in and they're visibly grappling. The public can only be fooled for a while. An awakening has dawned. Just you wait and see, my friend.
      To be frank, Bernie is a fool, and those that love him are even bigger fools. The proof is out there, but it takes a bit, not much, of investigation. Do the homework, get smart and wise up. I am running out of patience.
