You Can't Always Go by What They Say

Updated on November 19, 2011

just don't believe everything you hear...

A friend and I were talking the other day and he kept saying, “They say” or “He said” and I called his hand on it by saying. Who is he and who are they? He couldn’t respond or maybe he just didn’t remember just where he got his information. We continued talking and again he caught himself saying, “They said this” or “he said that…” Then something came to mind. I suddenly remembered a message I had heard at church and the scripture was from the New Testament, so I looked it up - “but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” James 3:8 ESV. A person can say just about anything they want, fact or fiction, but as my wise old dad used to always say, “just because they said it, that don’t make it so.” That’s right, people talk all day long and if we aren’t talking, we are probably listening to someone else talk like the TV or radio, a lecture or maybe just making conversation. Most talk - is just talk, but occasionally some people in our society do have the authority to ‘have the last word,’ and we want to rely on it, but this day and time you can’t always count on what you hear to be 100% undisputable fact. I also remember my mom telling me when I was just a little boy, “Don’t believe everything you hear and only half of what you see…”

He said, she said...

You may be thinking, where are you going with this Sam? Well, I’m just about to tell you. I would say that by now most people have heard about the trouble at Penn State University in Pennsylvania and are waiting just to hear what will finally happen and how will it all turn out. I would say some have already made up their own minds and have already formed opinions as to just what happened and may have even taken sides on the issue. One side is defending the coach by finding fault with the star witness’s testimony while the other side is in defense of the students as even more come forward to testify. Then today I hear of another instance at another school. Everyone is listening anxiously to find out the truth and what really happened.

Which Political Party do you associate with?

What's going on in America...

We are also all concerned to hear the outcome of the Super Committee and their ability or inability to come to a consensus as to how to handle our countries debt crisis. The Democrats blame the Republicans and vice versa. Who is right? That wouldn’t be so hard to determine if the sides would just be honest. But if that is what we long for as Americans we may be looking in the wrong place. Both sides claim to be telling the truth and possess the will of the people. When this happens the country needs to look at the records since we aren’t about to make heads or tails from what we hear from congress. What is really going on in America? Could it be a little deeper than just seeking a compromise over how and who is to pay taxes? In truth we are being asked to choose between two completely different ideologies. We are being asked to make a decision as to which direction we want for our country. Do we as Americans want this country to remain America as we have always known it to be, or do we want to give up on our past and embrace a more Socialistic form of government like European countries by having larger government to control our lives by dictating while watching over the citizenry and providing everything even health care? We can’t rely on the news media anymore because they are certainly biased, most choosing to side with the liberals and remain ‘politically correct’ as opposed to siding with the original founding fathers. It matters who and what we vote for next November 6.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue...” Proverbs 18:21 NASB

Thanks for sharing these insights. You are so right and our parents were so right. My grandparents warned their grandchildren of the chaos we would be facing and of course we didn't listen. Here we are now.

Thanks again my friend. Those memories of insight from my folks so long ago; I wish I could tell them now how true their loving words were and that now I see thru the eyes of someone older and much wiser now-- Thanks for the ratings.

Would love to return and take my wife. I've told her so much but that's not like experiencing it...

Good hub. I too have heard the phrase “just because they said it, that don’t make it so.” many times lol. I like what you say about believing half of what you see, but I think if this is TV or politics, maybe just 20% lol,

    SOCIALLY SHARED and voted.

P.S. If you get chance, you should return to Thailand, it is a very interesting and fun country!

Thank you James for stopping by and adding your words of kindness and support. All one has to do is look to the Bible to realize our future, but unbelievers are afraid to accept that for fear they may be enticed to believe...

Hey my dear brother, thanks for being the first to respond. I've been around, just not doing as much writing here as I have in the past. The big panda change did a number on my friends that responded in the past. Can't seem to find many of the old crowd so I've been experimenting with other sites and building a new blog.

The deception by the liberals to try to take over this country has gotten me concerned. Many Conservatives are even wondering if we have slipped to far for God to forgive and restore our country again. The political climate has sure gotten a lot of people thinking and praying for God to forgive and revive us again. That's a good thing though.

Hope all is well with you as we enter this most glorious time of remembrance and Thanksgiving.

samsons: dear brother haven't heard much from you lately. Welcome back. I never accept second hand information from anyone. Usually by the time it is being repeated to me, it has been passed from one to another to another and usually is out of context from what was originally said.
