You Have a Duty When You Wear That Uniform

Updated on April 22, 2012

I was listening to the news last night, and a video was shown of four Marines urinating on dead Afghans. I can not tell you the level of disgust I felt when watching this video. It is unconscionable to me how these soldiers could even think to do such a thing while representing the United States of America. The United States is trying to uphold a reputation of being a country with values and morals. This video does so much damage to the reputation of our country. It is bad enough that these Marines carried out such a despicable act, but to then videotape it, to keep it as a souvenir to be shown throughout the worldwide web. There is no excuse for these Marines in uniform to exhibit this kind of behavior. When they wear that uniform they are representing each and every one of us in this country. When these soldiers are wearing that uniform, they have a duty to represent our country with honor and dignity.

Did these soldiers realize the backlash that could result from such a disgraceful act being viewed by others from all over the world? The people that hated us before this act was done, will hate us even more now. If those were dead American soldiers that were shown being urinated on by the Afghans, we would be screaming for the capture and punishment of the men responsible for this act. We should be just as upset and calling for the punishment of these Marines. I don't think it is ever right to desecrate the body of anyone, regardless of the circumstances. The dead should be treated with respect and dignity.

I am sure that the rigors of war can weigh heavy on our soldiers, but they cannot forget that the American people depend on them to wear that uniform proudly and display the behavior we expect of them. I hope that this incident is fully investigated, and the soldiers responsible are held accountable for this incident. These soldiers need to realize that the war they are fighting is not a game. Their fellow soldiers are now put in more danger because of these irresponsible and disrespectful acts. The world is watching this video and we will all be judged by the acts of these four Marines.

...and, thanks dadibobs for your defense of literally millions of (mostly) honorable men and women.

maxoxam God bless you and I hope you never have occasion to need the services (protection, disaster relief, to name a couple) that are given by the military, at the risk of their own lives, even to those who despise them, and, arguably, aren't deserving of that protection.

well i've been away from the pc for a while now, i can only apologise for the way the conversation went. I am protective of our armed forces, i've served myself, and i spend a lot of time with several Iraq veterans. It's our governments who send us to war, i just couldn't seem to make sense of the responses i was receiving.

again, i am sorry to spoil this great hub, up and awesome.

If you unpublish it, then re publish it, these previous comments will be removed, i will vote it up again for you, without the awkward comments.

      cheers

What is your argumentation and let's see how long it will hold. You belong to the military, now why nobody protected Pearl Harbor given that it was an easy target? Or is it too difficult for you? I would understand!

I actually agree with you on allowing people to express their opinions, but I don't see this as a legitimate attempt to express an opinion nor to make a point. His/her postings are mostly incoherent with no apparent point to them. I suppose I just shouldn't read them, but when two writers get in a back and forth as they did, it's kinda like the fascination they talk about of "watching a train wreck." Hard to look away, I guess. Thanks for your response.

Oh my God! dadibobs, why do you keep encouraging maxoxam41 by trying to make sense of his insane comments? ...and NayNay2124, why allow someone who has nothing sane to say on any topic to continue to clutter your hub with senseless, pointless drivel?

read this hub on political apathy, it is written with regards to the British government, but it could apply to all.

If you don't agree with the choices made by your government, vote for someone else.

This is my last post with respect to this.

maxoxam 41 was the Arizona an old battle ship?, did the men trapped on board consider her a relic?

you make no sense, you seem to be just hitting out, why?

      Who's economy boomed?

I am not even American, and i can see your only agenda is to hit out at America.

You are correct, Japan did ttack the US, like i have stated previously.

Incidents, attacks call them what you will. The descriptive terms used now, do not take anything away from the original act in history.

War is wrong, and if our countries were never attacked, we would not need an army.

But we do get attacked, and our armed forces KEEP US SAFE!.

Wether you agree with the actions of your army or not, it is because we have an armed force, why you have the right to complain.

Say thank you to your countries military, and vote for a policy change.

Yes, we can. The army forces are idiots. It is the reason why the criteria of selection is so low! Why can't they go to enlist to the FBI, if they are craving for some action? Simply because their intellect is low! Which person with a brain will sacrifice his life?

    • dadibobs profile image

dadibobs 5 years ago from Manchester, England

You cannot get into the British Army if you have a serious criminl record or even debt!, you cannot judge our armed forces by the actions of four idiots.

Every walk of life have scum, rich or poor, educated and illiterate.

You couldn't say one white man who rapes a woman means all white men are rapists!

Nagasaki and Hiroshima were terrible incidents, but what would have been the cost in lives of invading the Japanese home islands, in troops as well as civilians.

      Remember Japan attacked the US.

NayNay2124, I absolutely agree with you on this issue. Our military men and women are better than this disgusting act. Despite some of the absurd anti American comments I have viewed I appreciate your rational approach to this incident. This was a disgusting act and they need to be punished. You are correct when you say there is no excuse for this. Thank you for writing this hub.

Since the bombing of Nagasaki, Hiroshima, since Vietnam, since Abu Ghraib, we know what the army is about! Recruiting trash ready to unload HKs.

    • maxoxam41 profile image

Why would people assume that the army has "the creme de la creme" of people? You don't need a Harvard degree to be part of the infantry, the navy or do they?

The army is the trash of the country, kids ready to humiliate civilians, to satisfy their lowest fantasies as they did in Abu Ghraib. Shoot at kids, women if necessary and you are surprised because they "simply" pee on Afghan bodies? Since when military men have a conscience?
