You See Me as Mean-Spirited and a Right Winger, I See You as Loony and a Lefty. How Do We Get Past Our Differences?

Updated on June 18, 2018

I took an interest in Politics at a young age. The Goldwater-Johnson race fascinated me and I've been paying attention ever since.

Finding Offense in our History

I was watching the News the other night and an atheist was defending the removal of a bench in Pennsylvania.

The weathered bench is inscribed with the words; "Men Who Aren't Governed by God Will be Governed By Tyrants".

Though the words are as weathered as the bench itself, they were visible enough to grab the attention of a local resident and offend him!

Naturally, he then registered a complaint.

That is the story as told by his representative, an atheist group spokesperson.

The quote is by William Penn.

Not only is William Penn the Founder of one of our original Colonies, many of his ideas found their way into the writing of the United States Constitution.

I found the whole incident, Ironic!

The atheist spokesperson, in defending the removal of the bench, wasn't a complete and total mean girl though, she didn't seem to have a problem with a bench, in a Park, honoring Veterans, just not that bench!

She proposed replacing it with a new bench...a better bench, which would still come complete with its very own inscription:

~Donated by the Atheist Society~

(or something along these lines)

As long as God would be excluded.

Really, Seriously!

She couldn't understand that the new and improved bench with the new and improved, (more modern day) inscription, at least as far as she was concerned, may be offensive to some.

As if only atheists are entitled to be offended!

As if only Loony Lefties have a voice!

That did not matter much to her, she was still far too busy finding offense, with the original inscription on the original bench, she couldn't possibly see far enough, to care about anyone else's feelings.

Maybe there was a resident that complained and maybe there wasn't, resident wishes to remain anonymous!

Political Correctness Gone Wild

Meanwhile, let us journey Down South a few States, where another hornet's nest has been stirred up and is just a buzzin!

Emory University intends to pay the tuition of some incoming Students...not for those born, raised and schooled in the State of Georgia or in the Atlanta area, not for International Students or Students that have entered into the U.S. through the Legal process.

Oh No....come Fall, they'll be paying 100% of the tuition for illegal 'students'; however, there is one stipulation, 'student' must have graduated from a U.S. high school.

What is wrong with this picture?

The most glaringly obvious to me...What kind of message is this sending to our kids?

What kind of message is this sending to any young person that has always:

  • Played by and followed the rules
  • Obeyed the law
  • Waited their turn in line
  • Waited their turn in the immigration line

Sorry Sucker, seems to be the message!

I guess the Good News for the 'Suckers' is that safe zones now exist for them in many Colleges, so after their school of choice kicks them in the gut and upside the head simultaneously, they can be guided to a 'special room', 'a safe space', provided just for them, where they can lick their wounds and be taught why this is all perfectly okay.

"Obama, can you hear us now?" "Dump the Trump, Dump the Trump...."

There is an ongoing battle between the Left and the Right, as to what our personal responsibilities are and as to what role the Government is to play, in our lives.

As time goes by, it seems as if Liberals are okay with more and more Government control over their lives, while Conservatives are rooted in self-reliance.

Libs may not come out and use those words, in fact, they'd probably argue their case, as being totally in control of all aspects of their life. All while relying on the Gov and allowing the Gov, to enter into all aspects of their life. All while expecting and at times, making demands of the Government, to do more and more for them, (although they're completely self-reliant!)

The Right is accused by the Left, of not caring and of being cold and uncaring, wanting children to starve and Grandma to die, all while wanting dirty water and a poisoned Earth, etc. and blah, blah, blah.

I've been hearing this Democratic strategy, for as long as I can remember.

As If...we do not share this planet too. As If...we do not have families too, AS IF...we do not love Grandma too...simply because we, (as our Founders) want Government's Role, as Limited as is possible, in our lives.

We are all children of God, we are connected in so many ways, but we've grown so very far apart!

Can we ever get back to just being proud Americans, without so much focus on Political Parties?

While I've accused Liberals of being Brats and of believing that the 1st Amendment only applies to them...of wanting handouts and of being spoiled followers...and crybabies...and loony (I'm just trying to get it out all out of my system)

I will make a conscious effort to do better and taper off on the name calling.

Will you?

For the good of America?

A deficiency in core beliefs = Confusion!

Right Wingers, Loony Leftists, Independents and the Apolitical.....is it just me or have you noted a lot of confusion lately?

  • We like him, but not really
  • That dude should be fired or maybe not
  • She's our gal, sometimes
  • He's the bomb, what a dud

Seems to me that too many people don't seem to think for themselves any longer.

Am I Right? (that is a legitimate question, I know I'm Right, but am I right and who the heck is on 1st...;-)

Are they waiting on instructions/talking points; on how to react, who to like and how long to like them, before they stop liking them and what to think and when to think it?

Along with all of this confusion, we continue heading too far in unknown directions, before we consider, what if it's a disaster and will we be able to find our way back?

Just when you begin to think we can, we may, we might...another crazy turn!

Seems as if you are doing a lot of reading between the lines.

Real History (not the idol worshiping stuff found in high school textbooks) involves research of primary and secondary sources. There are some interpretations; however, the goal is to find something that validates a theory and helps people understand a historical event or person. On top of that, it's similar to science in that it is usually peer reviewed, which means most of this ends up in journals (often before becoming a book found at Barnes and Noble) and the process may take time before it's verified (and that process doesn't really end when more material is found). Much of the information used is kept in research facilities, culled from interviews, newspaper or magazine articles, and research from other disciplines such as cultural or physical anthropology, sociology, archeology, biology, political science and linguistics (to name a few). In part, finding out Barton has his own "material" makes me suspicious.

David Barton has been criticized for making spurious claims that could not be supported by other historians. When one looked at his "research" much of it was based on exaggerated claims, cherry-picked data, and ideologically-based opinions that couldn't be supported by known evidence.

To date, his book on Thomas Jefferson was labelled as "dubious" by historians and critics on both sides of the political spectrum (it also received the title "most inaccurate history book, ever" from several historical journals and societies). Also, his claim of being a historian has been challenged, too.

I didn't realized he wrote for WND...which means his purpose is to write stuff to support a certain ideological view that his readers want --and will -- believe (in other words, confirmation bias) rather than to be objective and fair.

Now, getting back to that quote: from my understanding, it was ruled to be unconstitutional by a judge. Both sides in the matter have been looking for an alternative one that would honor those who served in the military (after all, not everyone in the military has a religious affiliation) and the bench was in a public place. A third party (based on a religion) got involved to halt its removal. David Barton didn't help this contentious matter when he wrote his article on WND. He only made things more contentious.

This brings up another issue. Throwing out the Liberal card -- or for that matter -- the ideological card is a losing proposition. When it's used in an argument to denigrate the opponent, it does the opposite. It makes the one using it look weak. To me, a tactic like this forces me to not take your argument seriously.

Actually, I have my own library of books. I may start keeping them in my safe!

I am very familiar with David Barton. He is a great Historian. He has an impressive collection of old documents that cannot be dismissed.

I know that Liberal Progressives loathe him, as they loathe the fact that the Founder of Pennsylvania was a Christian. They seem to loathe all American History.

L.P.s prefer we utilize fingertip research. (whatever comes up first with a google search)

You may want to back off of that William Penn "quote". He may not have uttered it. The quote supposedly came from a letter he wrote to Peter the Great of Russia, yet the letter does not have that quote listed anywhere. This may have been added by someone who republished or used it in their article from the 60s or 70s. Also (although you didn't mention his name), the story seemingly came to light by David Barton. He's known throughout historian circles as a fraud, and much of his work has been disputed on the grounds of gross inaccuracy. This is a link to one of the articles that questioned this matter http://www.patheos.com/blogs/warrenthrockmorton/20...

The important people in my life make up pretty much equal groups of Left & Right ~and the smart ones who make not one single political comment about anything. Actually, those are the people who come right out with, "I don't discuss politics & basically, I have no need to publicize." There are always a few acquaintances who are literally apolitical.

If I wasn't online (HP) as much as I am, I would not want to "talk politics," at all with anyone!

Frankly, after THIS particular campaign, election and aftermath thus far, I'd like to delete any & all politics from my vocabulary and my life!! You're far more informed than I am. Peace

After I finished up my last comment, I started thinking about North Korea...again and AS MUCH as I hate the piling on, hating on Donald Trump campaign that is taking place, I'd much prefer that to the fake, mandated lovefest that the North Koreans supposedly are involved in, with their 'Leader'.

The day we have larger than life billboards and propaganda fed to us intravenously, creating the Illusion of a Lovefest with those 'Hired to Work for Us', is the day I'll give up on this Republic and maybe head to Costa Rica or any place tropical....just sayin.....

Reading through some of the things people are writing about in the forums, doesn't give me hope of anything changing...for the better.

America elected a Businessman, because they were fed up with D.C......you'd think we had elected Kim Jong un, Trump IS that hated and he hasn't been in office 6 mos. yet!

I've said it numerous times, I was (am) a Cruz Supporter (he still continues to impress) but....this go round, that wasn't meant to be.

I'm willing to give Trump some time to see what he can accomplish.

I'll not watch another late show, some of the innuendo about Trump and his daughter and the language, when it comes to Trump....is disgusting!

Never once heard anything...not even remotely close, to this never-ending hatefest, when it was the Socialist Barack Obama (oops scratch Socialist...I AM trying to do better) Heck maybe that's a compliment these days....

I'm giving the People credit for understanding that we have big, big problems, with much corruption and so the People took a chance with a Non-Politician, by putting Trump in office.

Don't give up on us Benjamin Franklin, many of us really ARE trying to hold onto this Republic!

a.b. People as passionate and dedicated as you and I will never be DONE. We're too keenly aware of the true BIG picture and much too disillusioned with who and what has been painting that picture. That would not be us~~not the American people, that's for certain.

However, there's no escaping the fact that we are the ones who have either wittingly or perhaps, unknowingly allowed ourselves to be lied to, steamrolled, robbed and KICKED around, decade after decade. While our evil, selfish (alleged leaders) smile and increase their personal wealth on our backs, as they literally laugh at the peons they lead around by the noses.

People in general, every corner of our great nation are overwhelmed, burdened beyond capacity. We gripe and worry, seek answers that we never get. When human beings can clearly see we have an enemy...why do we only bitch about them and watch as they continue to steer the ship directly into the storm. Worse, we fight among ourselves rather than take up a common cause against the enemy! This is OUR country.

Take a good, long hard look my fellow citizens....you will see the only life jackets are wrapped securely around the corrupt, bastard politicians. There are only enough life boats for them.

They will have long abandoned ship before it goes down with us, helplessly being buried by the raging sea. Sound a little frightening? It should be fiercely frightening, unless we've become blind, deaf and dumb....

Paula I'm sensing some genuine passion from you this early afternoon.

Thanks for expressing how you feel about the way things are.

Things never go well for any individual that allows others to do their thinking for them.

Too many people wake up not seeing a new day with new opportunities, only a new day to be offended or another day to blame someone, anyone, other than the man/woman in the mirror, for their shortcomings.

I'm constantly reminded of the words of Benjamin Franklin, when he was asked what we'd been given here in America,. He responded, "A Republic, if you can keep it".

Will we, can we....when The People have lost sight of who is really in charge and who is responsible for making all of this work? Franklin didn't say... if the Government can keep it, now did he?

We never stop holding, those that we have placed in Office accountable.

I don't mean to go on and on, but one last point. I wonder how many Americans ever "think" about what goes on in North Korea? The People there, aren't Free. They answer to 'The Ruling Workers' Party of Korea', (just that name....Cringe) currently controlled by an overbearing Crazed half pint Dictator!

Counting my Blessings every day. I think I'm done now. lol

a.b.....Bravo to you for being honest and straight forward with the "way it is." We are fortunate to live in America, land of the free, home of the brave, with all that we have and all we are capable of attaining. One simple look at many other countries, those of lack and need, yet no power beyond greedy corrupt leaders (dictators) to attain life to the fullest, tells us this clearly.

For many years now, we can also clearly see that greed & corruption of the vast majority of our government is causing grave harm and unrest. The severe division we have arrived at, screams of the many flaws in our system, one blatant cause being a 2-party system. Why do we sit by and allow this & other problematic issues to continue? When will our country finally understand the simple rationale, "If you keep doing the same things, expecting different outcome, we qualify as insane?"

When we have 17 candidates vying for the most powerful position of all, and their success relies on which one can tell the more convincing lies or do the most harm to the others~~do we not see the pathetic results?

We can certainly feel slighted and insulted to have to accept TWO of the most unacceptable, incapable, greedy corrupt individuals on the face of the earth. 2 thugs who are totally convinced that all and everything revolves around them! Individuals who, if they ever did believe it, have totally forgotten for whom they work.....who pays them....whom they must serve! 2 pathetic Liars who compete only for the title of most evil and saddest of all~~2 candidates that made it necessary for millions of Americans to struggle to choose the lesser of these evils!

If we do not step up, speak out and demand so much better and then follow up with serious action to achieve this "better"...then no getting around it, WE are our own worst problem. Why division when we ALL should be working and fighting together against our common obstructions and enemies?: The politicians who created the current system before our very eyes and shove it down our throats while also creating diversion and believe we're all stupid enough to swallow it? It must cease and we know this! Are we up for the fight? I hope and pray we are. Hope and prayer is not enough. Please SEE this.
