Will Obama withdraw from Afghanistan now?

If our mission in Afghanistan is to decimate Al Queda, it seems that with the loss of BIn Laden and estimates that Al Queda's strength measured in the dozens, there is little justification for our troops remaining there.

No.  There are still some terrorists high up in that organization out there.

Not necessarily, but moving Leon Panetta (CIA director) to the Pentagon and Petraeus (Afghanistan General) to the CIA would seem to suggest a shift in strategy that might lean towards drawing down troops while increasing the efforts of the intelligence operations and drone attacks.

I doubt it. The US has moved beyond ignorance and is now in the grips of madness. Nothing we do makes any sense anymore. No one knows how to fight a war. Rule #1 in warfighting: You have to know who the enemy is! If you cannot identify your enemy on sight, you will never win. A citizen sitting at home on the couch can figure that out as well as any 60-year-old man in a green polyester uniform at the Pentagon.

It is a real toss-up question. As long as Afghanistan functions as a breeding grounds for fanatical terrorism, the argument could be made that it is important to continue the effort. If that is the case, then logic must then be focused on the degree of effort necessary to manage the situation. I think the eradication of terrorism from the world is not a viable goal so we have to look at the more viable alternative of managing it and surpressing its growth on a global scale. Bin Laden may have been a "factor" in the expansion of terrorism but he was by no means the basis of it. The movement and efforts to terrorize will continue and we will either have to elect to fight it in places like Afghanistan or on our own shores. On the basis of that reality, I cannot see the President turnng away from Afghanistan at this point. WB

    I hope not.

The battle against terrorism is far from over, and there is some terrible and inhumane suffering going on in Afghanistan. Osama is like a cockroach that has been breeding for the last 30 years. There are many others out there now, and killing him will have little impact on all the other roaches.

I honestly cannot see why anyone would want to bring troops home. I could understand though if it is to save money, since the American economy is not doing so well. But this debate is also rearing it's ugly head here in Australia (again). Perhaps I need to research this more so I can understand exactly what the arguments are for this.

I would love to be in Afghanistan experiencing some of the great jobs that our troops are doing. They have my utmost respect.
