Do you think joining the military should be required for all Americans after high school?

What about for only 1 or 2 years of service?

The military is not for everyone, particularly not for every woman.  I do think that everyone could do something to support the military, but requiring service for everyone is, I hope, not in our future.

No. I spent seven years in the National Guard and understand the value of service but it is not for everyone. I think the volunteer nature of our armed forces is a strength as the people who do join are motivated and dedicated to the job. This makes them better, more committed soldiers than a conscript service would be.

No, the military wants committed people and conscripts are typically not as committed to the military as volunteers.  The American volunteer military is as formidable as it is because it is a professionalized, volunteer, citizen army.

No, I don't think so.  I would never willingly join the military.  I don't mind helping my country, but not everyone should be forced to join the military.  Military life is very challenging and not for everyone.

Personally, I don't like being screamed at or ordered around too much, so it would not go well at all for me.  I am too independant and I would probably get kicked out.  I also disagree with some of the military's actions recently.

I served 4 years, my husband 21 and our older son is in now. The military isn't for everyone BUT I do believe all should be required to do at least 2 years of service to the country in some way. If not the military or national guard, then VISTA (the US version of Peace Corps), AmeriCorp or something. Just give back to the country. There are so many organizations that could use help; there is no shortage of places to volunteer. Maybe it wouldn't have to be 2 years all at once but some sort of obligation.

I was drafted into the U.S. Army back in 1965, and as things turned out, that one of the best things that ever happened to me.

However, I do not think there should be military draft today, but I do believe that all Americans between 18 and 25 (who do not join the military) should be required to perform at least two years of public service.

2 years of public service while being trained in some type of work or college or some other kind of training ,makes sense

Agree with uncorrectedvision, our military is the best in the world because of its volunteer nature. People may have different reasons for joining, and some may regret it once they do, but they can't say they did it because they were forced to.(luckily there's no more draft feenix!)
