No I dont think that it can ever work. It saps the urge to work hard and get ahead, that has been the engine that has driven the most prosperous societies.
That is the reason, why China, though nominally communist, has now adopted a capitalist economy.
Communism is a failed system, and the purer it has been the more it's failures have become obvious.
We have only got to look at Khmer Rouge Cambodia, and Mao's China to see that.
