   What is the best resource for someone who wants to learn about emergency survival skills?
   
   There is so much information out there and so many different opinions--is there one book/resource that has it all in a condensed, easy-to-read, without overloading you kind of way?

   Go to your local library and get survival guides and survival skills. They are usually in the  non-fiction section under the call number 613.69. These books usually give you information on what to do if you are stranded or hurt in the wilderness, etc.

   I'm not sure if this what you're looking for, but I think there's a book called Survival for Dummies.
   There's also The Boy Scout handbook.
   If you're want something a bit more hands on, you could take a STCW-95 course. Here's a site that will give you a better idea of what all is involved.

   The first thing to do is narrow down just what sort of emergency survival skills you really need.  They can vary widely depending on if you are talking about an urban (city) setting or a rural (wilderness) one.
   
   In the end, if you try and learn it all at once, you will wind up overloaded.  Your best bet is to look for a resource local to you which offers hands-on instruction with supervision and training.  That's the best way to pick up the basics and get verification that you are learning the skills correctly.  Too many people read books but then don't react appropriately in an actual emergency or forget what to do, and live instruction and practice does much better for building skills and retention of knowledge.

   I have heard that the SAS Survival Handbook is a good references, though I have my doubts. Your best bet is to go over the book reviews on the Alpha website. Those guys know way more than me.

   This is the best survival manual I've come across.  Many survival guides omit things that could prove deadly; this manual seems to cover all the bases!

   As others have said it is a very broad field and you need to refine your search, at least in the begining, by deciding just what you plan to survive.
   Are you looking to survive for a short time as in a natural disaster where you can expect help within a week or so or are you planning for some complete breakdown that will last months or years.
   Either way all of the info is out there for free so don't fall for any retail fear mongers trying to sell you a survival kit.
   Figure out what you need and piece it together yourself a 6 month supply of food isn't that hard to assemble and it is far cheaper to put together a good first aid kit than to buy something pre-assembled.
   The military book sourced by Faceless is a good starting place.
   Remember that being able to defend what you have is just as important as having something to defend. Sadly it has been proven over and over that the biggest problem with being ready is dealing with those who are not.
