In your opinion what is the most important language for an English speaker to learn?
Many need to learn English. Proper English is fading fast in the US.
I would say that the next depends somewhat on where you are.
Spanish is a good second language. Another would be Mandarin as much of Asia understands it.
But it tends to be regional, Russian is understood by most of Eastern Europe as well as parts of Asia.
I wrote about this. if you don't like a culture it might be more difficult to learn their language http://whoisbid.hubpages.com/hub/The-ea … guage-fast
It depends. As the universal language, English is sufficient. If an English native is in other country, perhaps learning the local language will be good.
More than the language it is understanding of other countries culture and realities that is matter, especially local knowledge.
Say for example, Mandarin - At best it is a local language and not Asia wide. In India itself there are 26 languages with 10 major languages. Spanish will not cut in Asian countries. In Gulf, once can manage with broken English and Hindi/Urdu. In Singapore and Malaysia one can survive without bothering about local language.
Well, the answer to that would depend entirely upon where said English speaker lived.
If you live in the US....then it would be Spanish. If you lived in Canada - probably French.
If you lived in Australia, Japanese or Chinese would be grand.
England? How about French or German.
The language of love. The language of communication. The language of laughter. The language of honesty, humility, and kindness. After that, Spanish. :-)
Frankly speaking, their own language; English. As a grammarian and editor I've found that many people cannot speak or write their own language in a meaningful and intelligible way. Language conveys our thoughts, so we should work on it each day to try to ensure we're expressing ourselves the way we wish to.
Us English are 'bloody' ignorant where language is concerned... we expect everyone to speak our language... we go on holidays to Spain, Greece, France etc etc and expect those in their own country to speak to us in English... shame on us.
I am trying to learn Arabic (Egyptian Arabic), just speech for now as I don't think I could ever learn to read and write it, but who knows? One can only try!
In the UK French or German are probably the most popular foreign languages to learn, with the whole of Europe on our doorstep you need to be able to understand one or two of the top 3 if you're going to travel much.
I'm learning Italian. Well I'm trying to. It's a pesky language with lots of things to trip you up - but I do enjoy a challenge!
I live in a Border State, so I would have to say Spanish. It is also a good language to start with since it is quite easy for English speakers to pick up on. After that, you can get into the more challenging ones.
It doesn't make a difference what other language one chooses to learn. The most important thing is your motive or reason for learning it. If it is for the right motive, it will aid one to stick with it until their goal is acheived. Most of the time when people learn a foreign language in school, the goal is to get a good grade or to pass a test. If your goal is to become a fluent speaker, then you will endeavor to use and practice the language as much as possible especially since we live in an English speaking country.

Is it important to you to listen to the opinion of others, even when you disagree?Often we have discussions with others on 'hot topics', on which there may be much disagreement. Is it possible for you to respectfully listen and allow that person to share their viewpoint?

Should everyone in this country be forced to learn English?English is NOT the official language of this country and it is considered one the hardest languages to master. Many Americans who move to other countries never learn the native language there.

I have a hub that was not featured due to problems with quality. How do we know what the quality issue is? I read the rating chart and didn't seem to find anything wrong with the hub in question.
