Can you dislike someone only through hearsay?
Without knowing, seeing someone or hearing words from that person's mouth, should you decide that you don't like them?
You can, unfortunately. This is why gossip and belittling, or "bearing false witness" is so harmful. If you tell someone about another whom you have had a negative encounter with, when the two meet there will be preconceived opinion on the part of the one who you told your story to.
Well, I dislike President Jackson for instituting the "Trail of Tears" back in the 1830s, among other (and sometimes even worse) historical villains, so clearly I *can* dislike them through what might, loosely at least, be called 'hearsay.'
Not sure whether I 'should'--certainly my dislikes don't make much difference in such a case!
You do yourself a grave disservice an similarly a disservice to the person in question to formulate an opinion based solely upon the reactions of a third party. Even if you know the third party you must realize that everyone has his or her own adgenda and baggage to strain things through. The best decision making comes from getting to know the party in question and decide for yourself. One man's junk is another's treasure!
You can't dislike anyone unless you personally know him. You can dislike his general reputation, or specific things you hear about him, but that's not the same thing.
No, never. To dislike someone for something we need to be sure about the matter not by just hearsay.
