   Sexual activity is not the only way to pick up HIV. Skin is an effective barrier to transmission of the virus, but if you have a cut or abrasion and the bad luck to get some bodily fluid from an infected person on it you could receive a gift you don't want. There are a lot of viri out there, too. HIV is not the only one that would like to have you as a host.
   
   No, I'm not afraid of contracting it just by visiting public places. I am, however, more careful about contact with people and objects than I once was. I don't go so far as emergency medical and law enforcement personnel, who now wear rubber gloves and face masks as a matter of routine, but I do what I can to avoid unnecessary risk.

   I am certainly not afraid. We can't stop ourselves from being in public. I am, however, very aware of the dangers in case of cuts to the skin and I agree fully with Attikos in this point. Im not afraid, but I am careful, not only because of HIV, but a lot of other deseases.

   There are worse things than HIV such as Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), commonly known as flesh-eating disease or Flesh-eating bacteria syndrome.
   
   I got it off a ATM in downtown Chinatown Honolulu Hawaii.  Within 15 minutes I had a big 'ol bubble on my digit finger. within 4 hours it was almost to my second knuckle. Went to ER to get antibiotics.
   
   I had one skin infection after another on the island 'Oahu - move to Arizona - never had a skin infection again.
   
   The water is so bad that I only swim when the tide is out. There is no law in Hawaii banning ships from dumping raw sewage - only a memoradum of understanding..

   No, because I understand that there must be an exchange of bodily fluids for HIV to be transmitted. If I have any minor cuts or abrasions, they are always covered with clothing or bandages. However, there is no reason to fear becoming infected with HIV in public places. There are much worse things to worry about in public. In particular, due to a large number of peoples' habit of not washing their hands properly, things that can kill much quicker than HIV are frequently passed in public.

   It might be beneficial for you to read a little about HIV and how it is contracted.  It is not possible to contract HIV in a public place.  HIV is transmitted only through the exchange of bodily fluids, and it does not live outside the body.
