Generally, more remote is better, assuming, of course, that you can get along with just the necessities. A small hamlet or village will in many cases be better than a big city; for sure, stay out of tourist spots. Rural will be better than urban, both in terms of being inconspicuous and of being self-sufficient such as growing your own food. Choose somewhere you speak the language over somewhere you don't, and if you're heading for a really primitive area, make sure that you have sufficient survival skills such as building a solar oven to pasteurize water.
A course or two in self-defense (I don't mean martial arts), as well as how to set up low-tech perimeter alarms will also come in handy.
