I have noticed, to my dismay, that many stereo-types are there for good reasons. I used to think that all stereo-typing was bad and should be abolished. Now, after many years of seeing them come into play, I realize that they are both a preconditioning AND a result of observations. This DOES NOT mean that all stereo-types are true. Nor indeed are they all true of everyone who resembles the stereo-type. They do however, fairly often, contain some basis in fact.
Yes, I am sometimes guilty of doing it. Yes, I do find that it is sometimes appropriate. No, I do not find this to be a good thing.
