How much corruption exists with the government at all levels in the United States?
For the past few years, Cuyahoga County in Ohio (Cleveland area) has been under investigation by the FBI for a corruption scandal. Many prominent county officials have been indited and now taken to court. Today, Jimmy Dimora was convicted guilty on 33 out of 34 counts. If this sort of corruption exists in Cleveland, what are the chances it exists across the nation?
There is much more corruption and fraud in the private sector then in government. The government is a victim of corruption and fraud committed by the private sector in the interest of the public, at all levels.
It certainly exists in New Jersey. We've had a lot of mayors go to jail for corruption. Some cities have sadly seen mayor after mayor go to jail for taking bribes and other corruption (Camden, NJ 6 in a row I believe). It's no wonder that the cities are in the mess that they are in with leadership like that.
I believe it exists at all levels of the government. Exactly how much money is involved? I don't know the answer to that, but it much be more then we can even imagine. Money was the reason Kennedy was assassinated. Money was the reason Lincoln was assassinated. Well money and the banks. But, money and corruption are related to each other, and money owns the government.
There must be a lot. Why else would people spend 4 to 8 times the amount to get elected for a position that does not pay that much for what was spent! I wish a new law would be made that if you make over 100k a year that you would be disqualified to hold the office. Take the money out of it and let someone who doesn't have money to hold the office. But I have always found it amazing how a candidate will talk to me until they get the office. Then I am just below them as they got what they wanted.
My dictionary defines corruption as a one of the powers bestowed upon government officials. When you say politician, do you think of corruption?
Corruption in government office is pandemic, and it is the natural state. To deviate from corruption is to deviate from politics..
The corruption will exist as long as people will exist. In live in South Florida and the corruption and fraud level is almost double here than enywhere else in the USA and it is spreading. Just to give you couple of examples; they had to fire last couple mayors of Miami for corruption (I just got a letter from Geico insurance that my rates are going up because the fraud level in this area is 200% of national average). The majority of people here are from Heiti and south of the border. In their countries everybody is corrupted up to the president. However here in USA, we are poloce country. The corruption is lower than most of the other countries. We have more laws in the book than any other country in the world. Actually we have double then most.
All governments have a certain amount of corruption; the US is quite low compared to some countries. Or else their detection agencies may be lax when it comes to checking people in high places.
Remember people who run for office spend a lot time and money getting elected, and they may not get re-elected. Some will grab as much as they can while they can, after all what’s the point of having power if you don’t abuse it.
All we can do is try to keep a tight leash on these dogs.
My impression from reading several newspapers every day is that corruption is common in city and county governments and somewhat less so in the states and federal governments. And its quite common in the banking and securities industries where firms including big banks like JPMorganChase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and securities firms like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs almost routinely pay billions of dollars in fines to settle SEC fraud charges. Insider trading is rife among private equity firms and hedge funds. The Detroit city government, the Wayne County, Michigan and a fair number of Michigan government officials have been charged with bribery and misuse of taxpayers' funds. Detroit Fire and Police pension funds have suffered from mismanagement if not criminality. And we worry about corruption in the government of Afghanistan!

The total amount of money pledged to Haiti for their recovery was about 5.3 billion bucks but so far Haiti has only received about 2% of that money. There are storage houses with food that they aren't giving to the Haitians and they have't started cleaning up so the people can go back to...

What is the secret to winning the presidency of the United States? This is completely subjective. I think it all boils down to who has the most ad money, & not necessarily about the promises made.
