I think state control of education has gone too far, but I suspect I'm in the minority on that. Most parents of schoolchildren now work. Most of those with whom I speak want year-round school, with meals provided and after school day care, all at the taxpayers' expense. It's a glorified babysitting service done with the usual efficiency of government, which is to say at exorbitant cost, but if enough voters demand it the pols will do it.
As for home schooling, government should not interfere with families at that level. Children are not little Hitler youth, not the property of the state to be taught as it dictates. They belong to their parents, who have the right to rear them as they choose whether or not the rest of us like it.
