What happens with a population that continues to grow poorer for the average citizen?
I think, eventually, if it goes on like that, it will come to the point where there will be wars or revolutions. I think we still have a long way to go, but now we can witness something that didn't happen 10 years, people are speaking up, people are rebelling. So, if governments pursue this line of action, it will end up badly, because people will have to stand up for themselves.
Good question. For a society that's past the hump of the Demographic Transition, birthrates will decline, because working class parents want to raise their children according to the standard of living to which they themselves have become accustomed. More children equals a lower standard of living in the short term.
That's what happened in the US during the Great Depression. Then after WW2, we had the Baby Boom that coincided with improved economic conditions.
I think the country would shrink in the long term and in the short term there would be unrest and higher rates of crime. More people would probably turn to criminal activities in the effort to make ends meet. The gap between rich and poor would widen and resentment for the haves would deepen.

I would like to start a discussion to help everyone that is struggling with the desire to help the poor and might feel guilty for having more than others. There's got to be a balance, I think.1 Timothy 5:8 states, "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own...
