How do you feel about President Obama's latest announcement and stand on Gay marriage?

With the elections close at hand, White House Officials and the Press are stating that President Obama's latest backing on Gay marriage is a risky move. According to the New York Times, "President Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage on Wednesday was by any measure a watershed. A sitting United States president took sides in what many people consider the last civil rights movement, providing the most powerful evidence to date of how rapidly views are moving on an issue that was politically toxic just five years ago."

It is good to see him making a principled decision for a change. So far his career has been characterised by political opportunism.
I just hope it doesn't backfire on him.
It really is a basic civil rights issue and should be treated as such.

I'm glad he finally "came out of the closet" so to speak. It took him a while, but better late than never. Civil rights should be available to ALL, gay, straight, bi, trans. It's the 21st century, this should not even be an issue.

Smart move. It is a popular position for progressives, who should be energized and encouraged by his announcement. Middle-of-the-road people and moderates probably won't care too much either way (there's more important issues to them) and those who will disapprove, already think Obama is the Antichrist, so it isn't like he can make them think much less of him.

It was smart the way he did it too. If he had made it a policy decision and said that he was going to start fighting for marriage equality, I think that would have been opposed by more people, but as a personal statement of faith, I don't think he will switch any yes votes to no.

This issue has LOST in 32 states that voted on it. If Obie loses 32 states he's history.

I think it's wonderful.  Aside from all the political implications, and I'm not certain it's a great move politically, it seems genuine and I like that.  I love that we have a person in power who thinks things through and is willing to let their beliefs evolve.  I think he has really grappled with this issue in a mature and intelligent way.

In short, I am pleased not only with the content of his announcement, but with the way he approaches difficult issues.

Appears he fooled a lot of people on this "evolution". His STATED opinion in 1996 is the same "evolved" one he just gave. Google it.

Pro gay marriage in 2008 and only "Supporting" Gay marriage in 2012 to me is falling backward and not forward!! Obie is only for Gay marriage in election years.  Wow how morally flexible?

Thumbs up all the way!  It's about time...

And by the way--this is at least the 3rd or 4th same question posted here on the same topic....

I'm sure it is, however, when I did the search for this question, nothing came up at the time. Not sure where my question fell in the order, but I can assure you I did not copy or pose the same question from anyone else.( I always check) smile

I am not an American or U.S. citizen but I do have very high regard for U.S. citizens. With this in my mind I feel President Obama is downgrading the values of American society by talking or doing anything in favor of gay marriage. What is gay marriage? Marriage was supposed to be between a man and a woman. All creatures on earth follow this rule. Gay marriage is only an abomination and unnatural behavior. Where will this kind of sodomy and lead society? I am very sorry to find that In India too our won government has withdrawn opposition to gay marriage.
Something is going very wrong somewhere with human beings. I feel this is a precursor to the impending destruction and a justification of grave consequences that will follow. Let us not forget Sodom and Gomorrah of the Bible. Before punishing any community God is in the habit of justifying the destruction by leading astray that community. Let us beware of this and act more sensibly.

Not surprising.  He's a left-winger all the way.  If he is reelected, the moral fabric of this nation will be further ripped asunder.  The whole idea of gay marriage is repugnant.

At this stage, I think he's done it to win votes.  You are either for or against gay marriage and it seems to much of a coincidence that he now decides where he stands.

It's another political move to win votes from those who support gay marriage.

It may lose him votes, but I completely agree with and support the announcement. Civil rights are so important and it's about time a President was willing to stand up in defence of the rights of the gay/bi/trans community. If he loses the election because of this issue, it'll be disappointing and show how much further the United States needs to go to really fulfil our self-proclaimed role as the leaders in freedom and equal rights.
