   The goal of genetic engineering would be to improve organisms. For example, if a certain disease is caused by a faulty gene and only that faulty gene, then if it were possible to modify the organism's gene, poof, no more of that disease.  That's grossly oversimplified, but that's the basics of it.

   Depends on who you ask!
   
   The military may want to genetically modify human genes to create a cyborg of some kind.
   
   The Medical establishment may think many illnesses can be cured or are caused mostly by our genetics.
   
   I'm sure that some diseases are more likely to happen in some people because of their genes,but I doubt that genes are totally to blame for our illnesses.

   Tha answer to nearly everything (literally) could be, and also most likely are, within the genodes of the human dna (as well as the dna of aLL carbon based life forms as well as carbonbase non-life forms) the governments of this world are not only restricting but have banned any research having to do with dna!!!) And the reasoning for this ( in my opinion ) is that the medical community would be utterly useless, as the cure for nearly every (natural) disease can and has been discovered by the private groups (those rich enough to curtail the laws put forth by our government) and squased due to the possible financial downfall of the medical society so therefore This is not political, it's definately not about sickness disease nor DEATH!!! IF  most diseases were either controled or even CURED pharmecuetical companies, advertising firms, doctors,lawyers,insurance companies, etc......Would all be nearly broke Even though the testing COULD possibly SAVE millions of lives, and improve the quality of lifestyles of BILLIONS, Most of all these tests colud and would SAVE trillions of dolars on behalf of the COMMON MAN ( all of US ) the truth hurts (in this case the warmongering bastards that put a stopper in the test's and all for the sake of THEY'RE money!!! The truth Shall set you free!!!

   Genetic engineering is starting to develop into something very promising indeed, and it could potentially turn into something that cures disease and regenerates new legs, hands etc for war veterans etc.
   
   This being said it still has a long way to go, and we probably won't see that in our lifetime, although it will come at some point, and that's why big Pharma need to control it.
