The last and the first politician to never belong to any party was Washington.
Jefferson could not get a foot into the White House if he lived today, because neither major political party would select such a risky candidate. It was a different world the founding fathers lived in. Then we had the Burr-Hamilton duel, today we have televised debates. We get the candidates, who best fit the world of today. As much as we thrash about and complain afterwards, the few who are actually going to get out of their armchair and vote, will put in either Romney or Obama for the next 4 years of mismanagement. 1/3 of people can be bothered to vote in a non presidential election and only a 1/2 can be bothered to vote for the next president. If people won't vote, why complain when their leaders are not representative.
