With the recent murders of Americans in Libya and the protests and U.S. flag burning at the Embassy,
by Egyptians, should the United States stop sending millions of dollars in aide to Egypt? Libya?
You seem to imagine it's charity, it's not. Our aid is a calculated response to foster at least decent relations with two large powers in two powder kegs of the world and an attempt to prevent them from taking an anti-American stance in their policy. Only time will tell if it works but the flag burnings etc. are irrelevant. If Egypt and Libya were to take a hardline anti Israel stance for example this would be far more costly and worrying from an American perspective than any aid so it's certainly worth trying to keep them on side.
in an ideal world, we would not have to bribe other countries to keep the peace for our country. we would spend the money we have to make our country healthy from within, strong from within. we would use tact and sound diplomatic policies to make strong allies...and those who would attack us simply because they could not bully us, would find us to strong to defeat. sadly this is not an ideal world. our leaders do not know how to lead. they are not wise. so we grow weaker all the time.
Those were stable regimes we helped topple or are supporting to. Now look what we have going on - ever increasing violence and strife. Why, if the plan all along was to cause unrest in those regions it couldn't have been done better. Of course we know that's not the case, right? Anyway, maybe we should stop influencing events and spending millions over there and keep the money in the family- over here.
If by stable you mean with no public support violently repressing though torture and murder the people trying to change it then sure. It's far more profitable to attempt to prevent a war and to ensure trade rights than the cost of the aid.
Those were some repressive regimes, true. But violence begets more violence as we're seeing right now with so many factions vying for power. Guess Gandhi has left the building and maybe we should too.
Tammy.....With every fiber of my being, I say we should not be giving money to any of the countries who claim with their own loud shouts that they HATE America ......and the countries that threaten to blow us "off the map" This is pure insanity to the mind of a rational individual. Why do we do this? How, in the name of heaven, do we justify sending money/support AWAY from our own country, when we, ourselves are dead broke...in DEBT, to the tune of trillions.??
This boggles my mind, to say the least....and infuriates me at it's ultimate. How do we make any sense of this? There is no upside to the U.S. to this absurd practice.
It's not as though this act of terror and violence is the first or "something new!" How many times, or how long must the attacks against us, need to occur and go on, before we leave these enemy/terrorist countries to their own devices and failures??
Thank you for presenting such a profound question, Tammy. Discussion is always necessary.
Yes! They HATE us - Americans. Our one and only true friend is Israel. I have to agree with what fpherj has stated here. Enough said.

Over the last few days you've seen lots of pictures of Muslims protesting about a film, burning and smashing things, and gruesome pictures of the U.S. ambassador's body in Libya. But I guarantee you won't see many pictures like those below in the mainstream media. These are Libyans protesting at...
