Has the original purpose of Affirmative Action, as stated by Executive Order 10925 & 11246 Changed?
"Affirmative Action", for the most part, was interpreted at the government and corporate level as a token quota requirement. Most companies approached their hiring practices in just that manner hoping to fill the quota to a high enough level that government scrutiny was avoided. Every time a job was filled in this manner two people were done a gross injustice. The first was the minority person who was hired for that reason first and foremost...his skillset for the job being a secondary consideration. The second injustice occurred when the person most qualified for the job did not get it because the did not fit the minority affirmative action goals. Nobody wins in that situation as even the guy who got hired does not take long to recognize that he is playing a token spot on the payroll. Corporations are now concentrating on diversity but only for selfish reasons as they see the workforce of the future offering a smaller pool of talent and more competition for that worker. Given that, the working environment must be receptive to people of all races, creeds, and colors as recruitment will move more to the international arena for high skillset professional talent. Affirmative Action was an attempt to not just legislate equality but to order it. Equality and fairness cannot be legislated or ordered except on a temporary basis...it will not sustain. Our society is froth with ignorance and ignorance breeds contempt and fear. Equality and fairness are better achieve when we work to educate our employees and open them up to respect others in the workplace...you get buy-in from the employees and the environment shifts to one of acceptance and respect. ~WB
