I learned several years ago during a two week power outage caused by hurricane Isabel. Water, non perishable food (I choose dried fruits, protein bars, and certain canned goods), batteries, hygiene/grooming products, first aid supplies, long distance walkie talkies (so you can communicate w/family), protection items of your choice (bokken, pepper spray, knife, gun, etc.) blankets, gasoline, puzzles/games/books, and a whole-house generator is a good idea. Having a canoe or boat could also come in handy if you're in a flood prone area. Emergencies are less stressful and much more easily weathered when you're better prepared.
