Yes, after Carter, ex-presidents were given permanent security details that get smaller and smaller as the ex-president gets older. It's more of a formality than anything. But I disagree with you. Our government is much bigger than a president. By your logic, should a former CIA or FBI director get a permanent security detail?--or every CIA agent for that matter? Should every general or national security advisor get a permanent detail? Americans are too afraid of being kidnapped all the time. Maybe if we had less secrets to hide, we'd have less to worry about.
