   Is there a reason why I should care that Prince Harry is in the military?
   
   I'm not saying anything against the military, the war, etc.  But why is it when Prince Harry does something, the media is up in arms?  Where are the world wide articles on everyone else in the military who does the same he does?  I don't care that he is a prince, that shouldn't matter.  People are praising him.  Why?

   I believe people believe it is a novelty that royalty would have job skills. Particularly job skills that take intelligence seem to be highly praised.  Isn't he a helicopter pilot ?

   It's only because he is newsworthy.   If nobody cared, the media wouldn't follow what he does.   It'd be the same if Tom Cruise or any other 'celebrity' was involved.   It's supply and demand.  If we didn't fall for the guff by buying their magazines, watching their 'news,'  facebooking and tweeting etc, it wouldn't get a mention.   It's escapism really...from our own lives into the adventures of others.  We do it everytime just about every time we watch television.
   
   Let's face it, royalty in any nation stems from somebody in the distant past wielding a bigger battle axe than the next guy and taking over.  After a few generations, nobody bothers where the king or queen came from.

      I like reading real news, and don't care about the lives of celebrities.  I just wish people being murdered or crime or enslavement would get more coverage than him.

   It was a bit of concern for many because they were worried that with Harry along hte combat lines, he might prove his area to be a bigger target, and more of a threat to the other soldiers.

   Some people seem to need to 'look up' to someone, or a collection of people, like the royal family, hence the cults of royalty and celebrity.  In answer to your question David, I would say no, there is absolutely no reason why you should care about him any more than any other service man or woman who is unknown to you. From what I have heard from Prince Harry, he would wholeheartedly agree, and sees himself as just another member of his team, who is no more special because of his heritage. The media is up in arms when Harry does something because those journalists lack the motivation or ability to write about anything more meaningful or complicated, so generate useless throwaway 'stories' which make easy reading for a similarly brain-dead readership.

      Agreed, but he does sit down to talk to the media, have pictures, etc.  If he just wanted to be "one of the guys", then I am sure he would have the power to make that happen.  Besides, isn't it unsafe to publicize everything he does?

   This is because the royal family is meant to set the example for correctness in all things British (in public at least--their private lives are none our our business). I think the point you might be missing here is the irony that in the US, our ruling class (the wealthy, the celebrities, the politicians) are part of a system that starts wars all over the world, but will never participate in serving in them. In the ancient English monarchy, kings and princes fought in wars and the system is perpetuated today as a means of inspiring others by showing that they are willing to share in the sacrifice. In the US, wars are fought by poor people led by career officers who are simply ambitious bureaucrats. The only example that our American "royalty" sets for us is the belief that military service is for suckers and that powerful people should want nothing to do with it other than to make money from it. Oh, but we should be condescending and give lip service on how much we admire the troops.

   Many people need gossip, rumors, and whatever else about a certain celebrity to keep them preoccupied. A lot of time these celebrities have to make the headlines to sway the masses on how they are perceived. Often, it doesn't really matter what the person does as long as their name resonates.
   
   It is the same with Prince Harry. The roller-coaster ride of him joining the army, partying, dumping his girlfriend, drinking, getting back with his girlfriend, the army, partying, etc..etc.. is the same cycle that "needs"  to make the headlines. Unfortunately, most people and the press praise Harry for his deviant ways. The more scandalous, the more popular he seems to become.
   
   Prince Harry is a royalty sock-puppet who takes his frustrations out on his girlfriends and the liquor bottle. Fitting into the royalty mould comes with controlled expectations. The military would be good him, but being privileged will keep him from getting to uncomfortable there.

   Nope. It is only because he is a royal that anyone gives a stuff. To be honest, I really don't care and am not interested. Everytime a read an article about it I think about all the other members of the military that have sacrificed everything to protect their country- where is their recognition.
