Do you think owning a gun is more of a right than being cared for when you are sick?

If you think owning a gun  is more of a right than being cared for when you are sick - do you think you may need to re-examine your priorities?

You're talking about two entirely different issues.  Rights on not something that is provided to you by someone else.  While we would all wish to be cared for properly, that requires the labor of another individual.  If you presume that you have a right to that care no matter what, then the person providing it has just become your slave, since they must provide the service regardless of your ability to compensate them.  Therefore they in turn have no rights.   You cannot have the right to the fruits of someone else's labor in a free  society.

Gun ownership as a right does not require access to someone else's labor.  The second amendment guarantee's you the right to own a firearm.  It does not guarantee that one must be provided to you.  You must acquire it yourself by purchasing it with the fruits of your own labor.   The Gov't is not required to provide you with a firearm.

We would all like to live in a beautiful home.  That does not mean we have a right to such a thing.  Because the builder of that home has rights as well.  Somewhere along the line people in the US lost sight of the fact that the rights guaranteed in the Constitution and the Bill of rights serve to provide us with opportunity.  Not guaranteed results.  The objective is to provide equal opportunity, not forced equal results.  A free society cannot exist when the result is guaranteed.  When Someone must provide you a product or service by force, they are not free.  When the Gov't must provide it, you are no longer free.  For the same reasons you have to show up for work at the time your boss tells you to.  He provides you with employment.  Therefore you must do what you are told.  The relationships is the same when services are provided by central planners.

So you have a right to own as many guns as you like, but  my children don't have the right to healthcare to save their life when they are sick?

They have the right to pursue healthcare.  Do I have the right to move into you home without permission if I am homeless ???

My owning one gun or 100 guns doesn't require anyone else to perform a service for me that he is not paid for. Correct? Your children have that same exact right when it comes to health care. Correct? Or do you really think people just get free guns?

They do Maddot, that is why we have Doctors and hospitals. Whose fault is it that it cost so much? We need a better healthcare system in this country.

I agree with LandmarkWealth, they are two entirely different things. No one has the right to be cared for. If you were a mean person that drove away your family and friends, that is your fault no one is there to care for you. You could go to the doctor or hospital and pay them to care for you. Owning a gun is something used to defend yourself. You buy a gun to defend from harm of other people like you buy food to prevent harm from illness.

Perhaps maybe the gov't should seize control of all the grocery stores and restaurants to ensure we all eat enough.   We've fallen so far, sometimes it's hard to imagine this country will ever be the same.

maddot has confused "rights" with a "wish list."

Uh...huh? These two issues aren't related.

Owning a weapon that can take a life should be treated very seriously. There should be 1 gun per household. With that said, the steps to be able to own a gun should also be close to impossible. Having a gun is not a "Right", it's an option. If there were no guns, who would need one?

Owning a gun is a right according to the founders and our constitution.  Because they lived through what happens to people when that right is taken away.

Just because its in the constitution doesn't make it right, therefore I can't approve, but that's just me.

Actually that's the definition of a "right". That's why it's called the bill of rights.  Not to mention what has happened to disarmed citizens in around the world without those rights.

Miss is right. Before the invention of guns there was never a woman raped, a home invaded, a weaker person abused by a stronger person, a single person set upon by three or four others. Why, it must have been a paradise of peace, love and rainbows.

Yeah...Way back when the Brit's occupied Scotland peacefully and the Alexander the Great rode around the countryside shaking hands with his fellow persians.  Actually more people have been killed throughout history by the bow and arrow then guns.

Really? Owning a gun is a right and if there were no guns people would kill each other with swords or knives. Heck, look in our prisons, they kill each other with tooth brushes and bars of soap placed in pillow cases. It's not about guns!

They are quite innovative with those prison shanks.  When my father worked in the Queens house of detention he saw an inmate killed with a rolled up newspaper that was made damp and then dried multiple times until it was like a knife.
