Anyone who thinks that prisoners have it easy has no idea of what prison is. It is a dangerous place where suicides and murders occur regularly. Guards arbitrarily exercise rules, often vengefully. Men are stripped naked for body searches and stripped naked twice a year and have to drag all their belongings a long distance to be searched for contraband. These are called lockdowns, and for roughly a month prisoners are confined to their cells and given nothing but baloney or peanut butter sandwiches for a month, maybe a boiled egg. They almost never eat fresh fruit or fresh vegetables. Despite claims to the contrary, people are left to die when begging for medical treatment.
To be a prisoner is to live without rights and dignity.
Anyone who thinks prisoners have it easy should go live the easy life for a while.
A poll of US judges said they estimate that 13% of those convicted are innocent. The figure I have read for America's incarcerated is 2.8 million (more than all of Europe together, exluding England, more than China, more than any other country...that's our way of dealing with social problems). Even if the unjustly incarcerated is 10%, that's 280,000 innocent people locked up.
And the separation from loved ones for a lifetime is horrible.
