It doesn't appear so at the moment. If a more secular democracy ever takes hold in that region and begins to spread, than we may look back in 50 years and say that it was the beginning. For the moment that seems like just a dream. Whether or not we agree that the Iraq War, the war in Afghanistan or anywhere else made sense at the onset is open for debate. But one thing that seems clear is the US has a bad habit of trying to nation build. Afghanistan should have been reserved for the special forces to track down Bin-Laden and his supporters. But sending Marines and Army there to build roads and schools seems like a waste of time, money and blood to buy an international friendship that we really don't need. President Bush campaigned on no more military usage for nation building back in 2000. He should have stuck to the original plan.
