Are we leaving anything for our children and grandchildren to do?
Everything I hear is about what we can do for them. I was hearing the same thing 40 years ago and look where we are at. That's all nice that we want a better future for generations to come. But, what about us? Do we not believe our children are capable of handling their own problems after we are gone? I don't want to leave my kids a mess, but I only have one life too. We are looking so far ahead that we are missing what is right in front of us. What do you think?
One step forward two steps back; that is what every generation seems to accomplish when you think in terms of what we have accomplished it is difficult to conclude we have improved the quality of life significantly (keep in mind), I do understand for the most part quantity of life has improved; yet, not necessarily quality... although, perhaps the ideal way to improve our world for our children is to (indeed) "go back." That is, reverse engines and slow life down a wee bit...
Wow, I have never heard it put that way. I totally agree. Many have been raising children who already feel entitled. No, I don't want to leave a mess. I think you are right, we are so worried about the future, we are not living in the present.
There is one thing we could do to leave our children the clean slate they need to take care of their own business in their own time. Stop borrowing against their earnings. We are strangling their world with our current consumption, measured by public deficit spending and accumulated debt. It is sinful. We should be ashamed of ourselves, deal with our day with the resources we have, and give them an even chance for theirs.
Absolutely, the problems we face today are just going to be so much worse for future generations. Yet, we seem to ignore these problems out of selfishness or just complacency.
I agree! And it is in all aspects of life even the National Debt and International policy! I would rather leave my kids some debt and a planet they can live on without needing a face mask or one devastated by war and famine and let them deal with what that costs. Maybe it will motivate them to do better than we did.
As far as material things, we created the self absorbed, BLING loving little monsters and now we are crying because we often don’t like how they act. Easy to cure… we need stop the endless giving and learn to say “NO”! Buy an “I am spending my Children’s inheritance” T-shirt and go finish our lives as we choose.
