Former Senator and presidential nominee George McGovern died on October 21, 2012 in his home state of South Dakota. George McGovern ranks right up there with President John F Kennedy and Robert Kennedy as he was the epitome of what liberalism is all about. George McGovern championed the causes of the poor and disenfranchised. He is best known for his stance on the Vietnam War.
He ran for president of the United States in 1972 against Richard Nixon on the platform of ending the Vietnam War. McGovern lost the election by a land slide.
He returned to the Senate after his loss where he remained for a total of (18) years. After he failed to win reelection to the Senate, he worked to feed the hungry in the US and in the whole world. He led efforts to initiate a school lunch program for children in America that feeds millions of children every school day. He was awarded the World Food Prize for his work on world hunger.
George McGovern----A true humanitarian. RIP!
