When an Indian American wins the spelling bee, nobody minds but when an Indian American wins Miss. America, people make racist comments! Why?
sort by best latest
None of those were her particular ethnicity. She's too close to being a Muslim. No... that doesn't make sense... but racism never really does.
Vanessa Williams, the FIRST non-Caucasian Ms. America was THE SUBJECT of racist remarks and death threats. These death threats were so heinous that the FBI had to be involved. Ms. Williams endured MORE negative threats than the suc non-C Ms.Americans.
I think the death threats had more to do with the Penthouse scandal. Vanessa Williams in my opinion was perhaps the best looking of all the Miss Americas. She won $14 million suing Guicione but withdrew the lawsuit later. Gender discr.
Nope. Because the answer is a simplification without regard to the whole issue. The backlash reflects the psyche of America and exposes what people here obviously think of people of color.
I agree with everything said. Maybe it's time to recognize that some people just don't like people not like themselves. My wife is Jewish & we have had trash thrown at our house just because she is Jewish. It's not a perfect world.
johnsonrallen, excellent and intelligent comment. I'm clapping, seriously. I think most people would agree with you.
Lois, the people I hear and come in contact with are upset and alarmed by Obama's blatantly socialist POLICIES, not his skin color. Isn't it time for everyone to retire that silly argument?
Exactly or else they wouldn't question where he's from and call him Muslim. Obviously his brown skin has classed him as an outsider in their eyes.
Lois you hit the nail on the head -- it is trash that is talking when they speak in this manner.
Everyone is right. There is a lot of hate for Obama because he is African American. There is also a lot of dislike of Obama's policies. There are also prominent African Americans who dislike Obama as much as European Americans. He is liked & not.
Always love your articulate and poetic responses. All very true.
It's not your garden-variety racism, that's for sure... but it's racism all right. It doesn't get anymore racist than that. This particular kind is generated by fear of Muslims. Being Indian and Hindu is too close to Arabic and Muslim for some.
I come from the position that there are racist persons in all colors and no race walks on water or its people all so very good. The above video link I provided shows that even Miss America believes as I do.
The Tweets were obviously racist, no stretch at all. So clear. Doesn't get anymore blatant than that.
Question, Mark---for what have we been dependent on diversity and how has it made us strong? I find that America was strong in the past because of the solid principles that at one time united us.
The people who made the racist comments do not represent Americans as a whole. There are millions of Americans who did not make those comments and do not feel the way those few who made the comments do.
Exacly, junkseller. Well said.
S little too accurate I am afraid
If it's fried chicken we do. lol
Junkseller, that is a valid pt! Americans these days try too hard to stand out as "fromSomewhereElse-American." Why can't we just say, if we're born here, we are just plain Americans.
Vanessa Williams caught HELL as the FIRST non-Caucasian, Black Miss America..She got it from both Caucasians & Blacks. She was NOT considered Black enough & considered an affront to the pageant.Because of a youthful fiasco, she was unjustly de
Cool point - and it is really wrong to call it "America" No Canadians, No Mexicans and they even leave out the "North Part" America is not a country never has been and never will be. Now some states got together.......
It's not really "ALL that hate and racism". It"s just that the media is sucking down everything that comes off of Twitter these days. There will always be jerks. ALWAYS.
Wow. You're pretty much spot on here, in my opinion.
I'm not a fan but they are "beauty" pageants so I wouldn't expect a winner who is ugly or even plain / average looking.
Let them have their fun. If you have ever listened to the question / answer section they don't have much else to work with.
There is a color caste system in virtually every society in the world, among every race, and in 90+% lighter is considered to be better.
I'm not saying it is a good thing only that it is a fact.
Isn't that the truth? I've never understood that either, just never made sense to me. In this vast universe we inhabit, skin color is what we harp on. sigh.
I am not color blind I am color celebratory. My wife gets stopped in grocery stores with our Amerasian son and people tell her how handsome he his and he must have a white father. We celebrate that.
The interesting thing about America is most of us are a mix of something. Not many pure breeds here. I'm a mix of 5 European nationalities, my wife of 4. My wife is Jewish; I'm a Catholic upbringing. Our children a mix. My nephews Korean & A.Amer
I agree both that beauty is in the eye of the beholder & it does not stop with one race. There are beautiful women of all race, color, shape, size & age. My wife is the most beautiful woman in the world to me.
Mine is to me and she is a different race. And our son is to me and what is an Amerasian anyway? Half American Indian and Asian, half American black and Asian or half Chinese American and Asian --- hihihi
Yes very true, I could't agree more
MG Singh, and you know this how? Normally in America we do not lump a concept of "all white or all black." I understand they still practice this concept in some places like India, but it is not acceptable norm here. I am white you know my thoughts?
You nailed it, MG Singh.
MG Singh I am Mulatto male. So are you saying that Half of me wants to over power all the blacks and enslave myself. Gosh I must be so confused. Please keep your racism to yourself.
This is a very racist comment. I don't know of any "whites" that want dominance over anyone. All of the "whites" I know are people who are married to people of other nationalities/races or have a circle of friends that are a huge mix of ethnicities
wouldn't say a large majority but there are still groups in this country that have that way of thinking. Don't know of any myself
