I understand its not unusual for the US government to shut down, the issue of why it shut down I am at a loss.
From the other side of the Atlantic it looks like some American politicians are trying to force a shut down and this is entwined with some bill about the provision of healthcare that is construed as socialism by the back door.
I also read that government workers wont be getting paid for the time off, this is of course unacceptable. Will the money saved go towards reducing the national debt I wonder?

The US shutdown is one that needs to happen in the hope that the US politicians will begin to work together to fix the country. With over 17 trillion in debt, the country can't keep on spending. Continually raising the debt ceiling does not work either. Politicians need to wake up.

A second  shutdown  in two decades  I think politically this is all corrupt for such a country that always showed off its  character

The United States government looks more and more dysfunctional by the minute, from north of the border here.

I was just listening to a Republican congressman, talking about Ted Cruz (another Republican congressman) as having high-jacked the government - infighting even in the Republican party now, not just between Democrats and Republicans. It's looking great! Who needs Soap Operas anymore?!

Yes - there are some things that appear unbelievable:
How can a small bunch of mad redneck teaparty followers in congress hold an entire administration at ransome?
How is there even a debate in a civilized country about mutual responsibility on social security and medical treatment?
How is it possible to politically link the approved issue of Obamacare (he was reelected, wasn´t he) to financial issues of the administrative operations?
This is all unbelievable, totally silly and it does in no way reflect any democratic maturity. But then - what is to expect from an election system, that is restlessly pushing new elections every 2 years (president - congress and all over again).

According to USA Today this is the 18th time that there has been a government shutdown.

I live in Europe and we took a beating from the American Gov about how Europe should get it's act together. WELL! Looks like what goes around...

As for your system of 'democracy' that allows a minority to take out the government; I have to say it doesn't look like a democracy that believes in the wishes of the majority to me, or for that matter anyone else watching this charade unfold.

And to close, I think there is a bigger game going on in the world stage that is driving this. The US government can't be that stupid as to let their power be so seriously harmed without a behind the curtain master plan for world domination being meticulously instrumented. OR MAYBE THEY ARE JUST STUPID AFTER ALL.
