It appears to me that people vote for politicians strictly by there sound bites and ethnicity. Does the character and truthfulness of a politician mean anything anymore? Do you vote for yourself or for country?

I think you are only looking at those in national offices or high offices in large state. In many communities, being a politician is really a part time job. We often disagree with politicians. They does not mean they are corrupt, maybe just wrong.
As far as I can see there is always a deal being made at all levels.
My local councillor drives around in a £ 74000 Range Rover donated by one of the local car manufacturers, it's funny how he got it just after some planning application approvals.
