What is the main reason women are not treated as equal to men in so many countries around the world?

Why a women treated as 'property' rather than as human beings of equal worth to men?   Why are boy babies given so much favour and girl babies regarded a problem to be overcome?   What causes this bias?

A very important question and we are aware that except women living in  a few very developed countries, plight of women in most of the countries is annoying and not appreciative at all. When I try to find the reasons of it, the following come to my mind. 1. Very dominant masculinity which is a result of constant engagement in battles, violent atmosphere and special appreciation of valor and  strength in  society. Various texts, religious and historical reflect  this sentiment very prominently. Over the ages, this repeated  depiction of man as very strong and aggressive and shower of  constant praise has made man to think himself as quite different from his partner who is also human, some physical attributes  notwithstanding. 2. Adherence of injunctions of some religious texts in some countries. This has also been a  great cause behind  women being put to mistreatment because religion imprints a great effect on the human psyche. 3. Lack of education is another factor. In those countries where women are less educated, they are a exploited lot. Since exposure to education liberates our mind from narrow prejudices and absurdities, opening of all avenues of liberal education to women will make them more progressive and thus enable them to be on the same pedestal as men are. 4. Lack of tolerant attitude of men. Men do not reflect on their behavior toward their counterpart. Sometimes, men's reactions to women seem to them as natural. We do not give the least attention to this kind of behavior. We assume it as our right to yell at our counterparts but vice versa torments us no end. This kind of phenomenon is very dominant in less developed countries and also very conservative societies of the world. 5.since a boy inherits the legacy and ancestral assets of his parents and the girl has to leave her parents' place and parents have to incur a lot of expenditure by way of ceremonies and ornaments and other precious gifts, a biased attitude creeps in men's minds since the very birth of girl child. These are some reasons of ill-treatment meted out to women in various countries. It is a heavy burden on the minds of all right thinking persons to wipe out this slur on the face of humankind once and for all. Tusitala, a very relevant and great question and I also look forward to reading more answers to your sincere question.

Because men think they are superior. They triumph over women.
