I think it depends on how an individual defines "hard work" and "success". I feel I've reached a level of success in my life by reaching my goal of being self-sufficient, yet I don't work at a job that I consider hard (difficult?) in any way. Some people use their talents to find success (musicians, writers, etc) and a lot of them wouldn't tell anyone they worked very hard to get where they are now. Or maybe what we perceive as hard work on the part of others to get where they are, they perceive as having a good time doing what they really love to do.
