Should people be free to achieve?
As America slips into a socialistic state; how will achievement be defined? Will the individual be defined as a public servant simply to serve the community. Will ambition and talent exist only to serve those who have none. If all have a right to housing; what housing do they have a right to. What job will they have a right to? Does equality mean, 'equal under the law' or equal in intelligence, possessions, ambition, talent and who then is the definitive authority, as to a human norm of conduct and achievement?
I'm not sure I understand the premise of this line of thought. How should ensuring everyone has housing stop you from achieving anything? Human beings should have the right to basic needs. The last time I checked, the people living on section 8 in my town did nothing to prevent me from working hard and earning money. There is a tendency to treat poor people in this country as though they are trash or subhuman. You nor I know the stories of all of these people. How does meeting their basic needs - and sometimes not even that, in any way effect your ability to achieve or accomplish your goals? - It doesn't.
Christin--That you take my money by force and give it to those who have not earned it, how is that justified? In taking my money you limit my freedom. The more you take the less freedom I have. "Socialism is the equal distribution of poverty."
Thx Jthomp. Everyone is a "taker", when you drive on roads, send your kids to school etc. my tax dollars pay for that. You can't have a society that is completely non-socialist. Some people can't earn - what? throw them away like garbage?
Christin--Roads are primarily paid for by gas tax that all pay who drive. Schools are becoming money pits and better left to private industry. Some can't work--charity and local government--most are lazy.

With all of the uproar over gun laws lately, I'm curious to see what HubPages thinks. So here's the question:A) What guns, if any, should be allowed?B) Do "gun laws" actually accomplish anything?

It's the same old story in the UK coming up to Guy Fawkes Night - an elderly woman in a small town near to my village has sustained serious eye injuries after a firework was thrown at her while she stood at a bus stop! She is in the local hospital and it's still not clear whether or not her sight...

Should people over 75 be allowed to drive. car accidents involving people over 75 have now surpassed the traditional high risk 16 to 25 year old age group. Should people over 75 be subjected to more frequent testing and possibly be prevented from driving by the age of 85.
