What could be done to help Americans become more united?

There is such great division amongst Americans - social, political, and religious.  How can we get Americans to pull together towards the same objectives, and to be more tolerant and compassionate of each other?  Is there anything that can unite Americans together in one common cause?

Getting along with each other is the key to unity, believe it or not. Oftentimes, when people stand together under an idea, it's all because they share that belief to some degree and they don't have qualms with other members of the group substantial enough to keep them from being active.

Another thing, in my opinion, is to step away from the internet for a while. Hypocritical, right, since we're both here right now? The internet allows us to connect with our peers, but it drives us further apart. I'd much rather hang out with my roommate face to face than talk to him over Facebook. Plus, being together generates new experiences

I'm ranting, I know. In short, be together, accept each others' differences. Franz, out.

Resurrect FDR's CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps, and put people to work again (SEE this week on PBS American Experience).

Maybe, just maybe build a gov't sponsored pyramid bigger than any Egyptian ones, utilizing plenty of drug, booze and java breaks to fire the belly and soothe the soul - don't want to be working under unatural conditions.

you are right franz. on the other hand abe, go to Jamaica and get up with those "dudes" big government did not get us out of the depression as you may have been told. world war 2 did that.
one other thing that could help unite us. though we may have different skin tones, and different religions, we all have on thing in common. we are all americans if born here or earned citizenship. we need to stop ading prefixes to our origin. i respect your right to understand and be proud of your heritage, but you are american. when people ask where your people come from tell them right here. this is our home and as for me i will defend it with all i'm worth.

I'm pretty sure Machiavelli would say: "An external war"! But then again...
