Yes, but it takes effort. I consciously work to be informed just enough to know what is going on in the world, but not to "overdose" on negativity in media etc. I do not have cable, I selectively read media that is not inflammatory and I work hard to focus on the good in people. Media distorts our view of the world, making us see only the bad and that is amplified to where it can be easy to see the world as vile and hopeless.
I get involved with causes that better the world and in whatever small ways I can, I do things daily that bring a bit of happiness to others. Those small acts also make a difference. What we constantly think about and engage in is what manifests in our life. I am conscious to create peace and to be as good of a person as I can. That helps me to see the good in others and to have a lasting sense of peace in a seemingly chaotic world.
I hurt for those who hurt, but I distance myself just enough to not lose empathy, but not be swallowed by feelings of despair.
