We risk nepotism and corruption on an incredible scale when we automatically vote in people on the basis of family relationships, creating an aristocracy. And we limit the turnover in government positions that prevent the corruption long time service enables.
Then there's the fairness factor - where you lose out by saying that the other 99% of the population isn't qualified because they aren't part of the in group. Family businesses start to fail when they choose relatives who are mediocre instead of hiring great talent, and tolerate bad behavior because someone is related to the boss. And nations do the same when they make the same decision.
