Stephen Kalu asked here "what if am far older than the person who I see as above me in IQ?
I asked another question [related to IQ] and Stephen Kalu came up with this derivative. I think it is also a very interesting take on how we tend to feel in certain situations. Thank you Stephen Kalu.
So what if your conversation with a child brings to your attention that that child has a higher IQ than you think you do.? How do you feel then?
IQ is relative to one's age, so a 10 year old with an IQ of 140 is working at the level of a 14 year old.
It does not mean the child knows far more than you do. After all, we don't let a ten year old with an IQ of 160 drive or one with an IQ of 180 vote.
And IQ does not mean the person is better. Many brilliant people have fallen for stupid scams from spiritualism to Scientology or convinced themselves of theories far removed from reality (transgenderism is a civil right, there's no difference between men and women despite the biology, etc).
I have to agree with your reasoning Tamara White, however, there are people with an IQ that is out of proportion with their age. The point I am making here is that adults often assume they know better than a younger person. What if that does not hold
"So what if your conversation with a child brings to your attention that that child has a higher IQ than you think you do.? How do you feel then?"
Personal reflection shares this is very common for me today. That is said as a mature sixty plus adult with a hidden snicker not of contempt, yet having willingness to trust their knowledge. I am amazed at the capacity of children today to solve 'my' problem specific to technology. One may wonder why? I may question my intelligence therefore relate that to having less IQ. But, that in reality is a misnomer wouldn’t one think?
No matter my feelings are at times mixed. The experience may be pleasant or unpleasant. When unpleasant I experience at times surprise and sadness. Alas, I am a ship adrift in the sea of progress’s currents taking me farther and farther away from shore. I see another ship masterfully manned by youth seeming like a swift sloop jibbing and jabbing across open seas heading toward its destination.
When of pleasantry am still of surprise, although of joy seeing hope and opportunity. Sadness is absent as a grin paints my face with glee followed with a subdued chuckle. No longer distracted of awe I become accepting seeing opportunity of interacting with a teacher.
That teacher having open mind, criticism absent, and willingness smiles wide with that opportunity of sharing. Together we can interact growing like sunflowers in a field of wild flowers at early spring. In other words my feelings are accepting like the opened wide arms of Mr. Sunshine.
My oldest child had his IQ tested last year. He scored a very high #. However while he tested well above average in his age group he still lacks in a lot of departments.
He knew he was different. He looks at things differently than most children do, but he is still a kid. IQ is ability to learn more than it is knowledge already known.
I tested very high when I was 17. So I have made sure not to tell my son what his actual number was, but more tell him what is possible for him. I have no desire for him to turn out like me. I want him to use his ability. I will not push him, he is intelligent enough to figure out what direction he wants to go. I have made that clear. However I have moments when I am taken back.
My son knows more about the modern world, wars, politics, science, and life in general than most adults I have ever met. BUT he is just a kid. A very bright child, but still a child. There are many life things that are unrelated to IQ and I make sure he understands that as much as possible.
Hi Annsalo, Thanks for sharing with us.Many young people these days seem to have an inordinate grasp of the world around them, don't they? You are wise to give your son room to grow in his own way. You sound as if you're very close and that is good

What does having an IQ above 145 mean? Are these people really 'genius'?
