Why are college kids such babies today? (Life doesn't care about your feelings!)

The whole point of a college education is to be exposed to different viewpoints, but nowadays the college kids are just pathetic.  Viewing "The Great Gatsby" as a harmful book because it has suicide and misogyny; "Things Fall Apart" may offend people because it talks about slavery and has elements of racism in it.  Colleges put "trigger warnings" on syllabi to warn students that the book/assignment may hurt them in some way, or cause discomfort.  In addition, there are "Free Speech Zones," and students protesting right wing speakers.  You can't even hand out the Constitution--this is the USA!

I was offended when I had to read The Great Gatsby for one of my uni classes because it's so f'ing dull and full of unlikeable characters and I was reading it for the THIRD time and yeah I kind of wanted to cry...

But seriously, I haven't heard of any of these situations so something tells me these aren't big and common complaints coming from a majority.  There will always be precious little snowflakes out there who want to shelter themselves but I think most people are pretty capable of being normal human beings.

On the contrary, it is going on with many US universities.  Don't know about Canada.  People need to handle being offended in life.

I agree with you, life is going to be very hard for people who can't learn to deal with conflict or need to be shielded from otherwise harmless things that offend them. Literature is a big one for me-a lot of great books deal with nasty stuff.

'nowadays the college kids are just pathetic' - I think they are simply a product of their varied upbringings.

People have been saying the same thing about college kids, for decades. They were 'bad' in the fifties and sixties because of Elvis and The Beatles 'bad influences'. They were bad in the seventies because they held protests, burned flags & bras and did drugs. (Btw, this is the same generation that many accuse of 'selling out' in the eighties - to bring in the chaotic social environment we live in today, ha!)

They were bad in the eighties because of all the blatant, in-your-face rebellious music and fashion, etc. And in the 90's into the 2000's with the information age - people have to be suspicous and cause a ruckus about everything they can. That seems to be 'the thing' to do nowadays - question everything.

And admittedly, it should probably all be 're-questioned' now that information can be so much more freely shared. Pathetic kids will grow up and learn how to navigate and rule their own world - eventually. And hopefully, they will learn from previous mistakes instead of repeating them.

I have faith that the future will not be run by pathetic people. It could happen. wink

Right.  It will be run by liberals who force people to think their certain way.  The world will suck.

I remember when conservatives & liberals semi-respected each other; even vote for each others candidates. It may take a while to adjust to information overload - but 'middle ground' can rise like a massive, inhabitable mountain in between both si

How old are you, Lolita - in your 20's? How would you know if things are more prevalent, now? LoL! Its not - college kids have always been 'progressive' know-it-alls doing their own wacky thing. They aren't that much different to previous generations

You're right that there were Greeks complaining the latest generation was immoral, but majority illegitimacy rates, delayed starts to adulthood and whining about micro-aggressions when ISIS kills homosexuals and Christians shows a major failing

Lolita your still young and beautiful like the rose in your profile pic....And no matter how old you get someone around you will always think that. So not only our age matures but our attention to beautiful things as well.

Morality comes from two sources: do your duty as described by society/religion, or do what your heart says.
We've gone too far into the "do what you feel" side on morality, where if you think X is right, the law and moral standards are irrelevant.
And we have given too much weight to feelings when it comes to who is right in a debate. The person who is most angry or offended is presumed to be right, regardless of the rational reasons of the other side. That the angry person may be blowing something out of proportion, utterly irrational or truly mentally ill isn't taken into account.
And now you have cry-bullies who switch from incredibly angry to whiny, whichever emotion gives them the most moral weight in today's society at that moment.
When you've been told your feelings out weigh other people's opinions and being more emotional makes you more right, the end result is people who think they win the argument by having the biggest tantrum.

This is true and this behavior actually really hurts most discourse about a lot of controversial issues.

It also drives the rise of extremists like Trump, when anyone who is moderate has been silenced by shouts of racist/sexist/-phobe.

Michaela..Interesting.U mean "this behavior" as in having a hissy-fit & threatening 2 report a group of "hateful" adults expressing their opinions on UNI-sex bathrooms & trans surgery for children? Another day, another image?

"Why are college kids such babies today" Does it really matter? These are going to be yet again the smartest generation. IQ test scores go up year after year, showing that the newer generation are likely going to out smart the previous generations.
Do you understand what the term "trigger warning" is for? It is used for people who have been abused, sexually assaulted, bullied, etc. so that they know the potential reading material may trigger memories from whatever the abuse they suffered was. What's the problem with that?
So while you might be annoyed by them, not everyone is so bothered by people having feelings and thoughts they can freely express as you are.
Disliking and thinking the college kids are beneath you is something that happens in every generation.

Actually, you can't speak for freely at college.  You have to sign up for the "free speech zone."  I care, because these idiots are only allowing liberal views--God forbid you are pro-choice!  Many people have made it through w/o stupid warnings.

I've been to college 3 times, no free speech zones, must be only at few colleges. What kind of person doesn't want ppl who have been abused for years or raped be able to have a bit of peace in knowing something is a trigger? Have u ever been a victim

I'm talking about college NOW.  Read the news.  I understand the victim thing, but people are taking it way too out of control.  Getting upset over stupid things-being offended by the American Flag--we live in America!

Yes, I said earlier, its the internet that this generation is developing in - they'll figure it out, eventually. People have been dissing/burning the flag since the 60's. Media makes stuff seem more/less than it actually is depending on the agenda.
