We made a big mistake not doing the same thing on the continent. We failed in that endeavor. China has less than altruistic intentions, nevertheless it will pay dividends down the road in terms of not only diplomatic relations but mineral wealth as well. The US would be call on the carpet for "exploitation," while China gets credit for "fostering new relationships." Remarkable double standard. But had I been able to make decisions like that, I certainly would have increased our influence, particularly in West Africa. Could have been a real agent for change. Now we just offer military aid. That's fine. But we need cultural and structural changes as well.
