But the Philippines in the distant past did have the nickname:
"Pearl of the Orient Seas", given by some Spanish traveler back in the 1700s.
Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero, referred to his beloved motherland as Pearl of the Orient ("Perla del Mar de Orient") in the last poem that he wrote before he was martyred, "Mi ultimo adios".
And in the national anthem of the Philippines, the country is referred to as "Perlas ng Silanganan" -- Pearl of the Orient, which was a (non-exact) translation of the original Spanish line "hija del sol de oriente".
